***The next time some yells "3rd Way" at you, have them read this. I learned that the "3rd Way" invective is based on something called the "New Orleans Declaration". A "progressive" was kind enough to post a snippet of an editorial on it.But me, being me ... I found a re-post of the actual Declaration. Suffice it to say, the New Orleans Declaration does not say what "progressives" say it says. Moreover, the Declaration is quite appealing to me.***

RePost: The Manifesto of The Third Way Democrats- The New Orleans Declaration
ABOUT THE DLC
The DLC is a new generation of elected Democrats from all over the country and all levels of governmentmen and women who are tackling the challenges of a new political era with vigor and imagination.

The New Orleans Declaration
A Democratic Agenda for the 1990s
This Declaration carries forward the best of our Democratic tradition: Jeffersons belief in individual liberty and responsibility; Jacksons credo of equal opportunity for all, and special privilege for none; Roosevelts thirst for innovation; Trumans faith in the uncommon sense of common men and women; Kennedys summons to civic duty and public service; Johnsons passion for social justice; and Carters commitment to human rights.
It declares our beliefs that the fundamental mission of the Democratic Party is to expand opportunity, not government; in the politics of inclusion; that America must remain energetically engaged in the struggle for freedom in the world; in deterring crime and punishing criminals; in the protection of civil rights; in the moral and cultural values most Americans shareliberty of conscience, individuals responsibility, tolerance, work, faith, and family; and, that American citizenship entails responsibilities as well as rights.
We believe The New Orleans Declaration represents a turning point for Democrats. It declares our intent to transcend our differences, set forth our principles, and forge a broad national agenda to restore Americas economic strength, expand opportunity for every citizen, and promote freedom and democracy in the world.

(16,104 posts)and then we're into 12 years of Republicans already! We were getting our asses kicked!
The 'Third Way' was how to expand our reach to a new majority! A Bigger Tent!
We have 'the left.' We have 'the right.'
The winner is whoever peels off the most in 'the center.'
A lesson we'd best not forget.

A Record of Impact
We dont just sit around and think, in a tank or elsewhere. We get results. Our ideas have been adopted by the President, Members of Congress, and other policymakers. Were proud of our track record that includes...
Getting People Talking
We want people talking about our ideas. Thats why we aggressively promote our products with the media, making sure that we dont just issue papers and reports but that we use them to drive the policy and political conversation in Washington.

(11,175 posts)Hillary Clinton, among others, has since criticized those positions.
The DLC also opposed single-payer health care.
I am a progressive (no scare quotes needed) and I think the DLC was wrong on all three of those major issues. And, on behalf of all the people who are standing up to the corporate oligarchs, I sure as hell hope that the era of big government is not over.
