President Obama senior campaign adviser David Axelrod on Wednesday insisted the president did not authorize anyone at the White House to leak the classified national-security information that has led to congressional anger and a Justice Department probe.
I can tell you that the president of the United States did not leak classified information, as Mitt Romney suggested yesterday, and he didnt authorize the leak of information, as Mitt Romney suggested yesterday, Axelrod told MSNBCs "Morning Joe."
(snip)
Axelrod said strong signals have been sent that leaks will not be tolerated, and said two U.S. attorneys and the Department of Justice will get to the bottom of whatever happened.
The president will never, ever authorize the release of classified information, nor will he jeopardize the safety of the men and women whose safety he is responsible for as commander in chief, Axelrod said.

The president has full authority to do exactly that.
The president, by definition, cannot "leak classified information". He has the full executive authority to release any information he would like on any terms.

But that said, I completely agree; the President, as CinC, has the absolute power to release, or authorize the release, of classified information ... and, I believe I read somewhere, so can the Chair of the Joint Chief, so long as it does not counteract a presidential directive (IOW, he tells the president that he plans to release/authorize the release of classified information, and he can do so unless the president tells him not to.

(25,272 posts)The leaks that Rmoney is referring to - did it in fact come from the White House? or was there a leak and they are just pointing fingers at the WH? Who else besides the WH would have been privy to what was leaked?
