I have witnessed a trend on DU. A recent example was a post about the tweet from Comey comparing Nunes to Joe McCarthy. I did not have to read many responses before the song began, "too little, too late," "he undermined Hillary," "he's a rethugnant," and suggestions that he should engage in obscene (if not physically impossible) acts. The same song is sung when Steve Schmidt or Joe Scarborough, etc. criticize Trump.
I'm old enough to remember Watergate. Watergate was a two-bit burglary and a bungled cover-up and obstruction. What we are facing now is far, far worse. We have a racist, probably mentally ill, would-be autocrat working over-time to replace our democratic Republic with a one-man reich.
Anyone, anyone who stands-up and calls attention to the fact the Republic is in peril should be applauded. All past sins must be, if not forgiven, at least overlooked. The repentant must be welcomed. The recently converted must be applauded.
There is simply too much at stake. All who are resisting Trump's attack on our institutions are in the same fight. Until the Republic is secure, Trump is out of the White House and the place thoroughly fumigated, we cannot throw stones at any one on our side of the lines.
The enemy of the enemy of the Republic is my friend.

(6,856 posts)Except for the part about watergate. The White House had its own spy network and they were out to destroy people. But yes, anyone who helps save the country is our friend

(11,109 posts)My point is that Watergate was small beer compared to the current threat. Nixon was a dishonest paranoid. Trump is actively working to undo the Constitution and Paul Ryan and his ilk are abetting.

(5,210 posts)Some people aren't understanding the essential nature of what you're saying, I think.
WE ARE AT RISK OF LOSING OUR DEMOCRACY. That's not hyperbole. We wouldn't be, IMO, if one of the 3 branches of govt, with our built-in checks and balances, hadn't completely capitulated to Trump, but the GOP Congress has. Not only can we clearlynot rely on them, they are adding to the problem!
We can't afford to turn ANYONE away who will join us in this fight.

(153,193 posts)that fucker helped put Trump there and he should come CLEAN about that
I am SICK of being told we need to overlook SERIOUS transgressions

(11,109 posts)Comey bears a lot of responsibility for Trump being in the White House. He allows that the recognition of that fact makes him "mildly nauseous." That is all the coming clean he is going to do.
The important point is that Comey is now a huge burr in Trump's butt. For me - right now - that's good enough. If Trump was educatable (which I do not believe he is), he would realize that firing Comey is what brought him Mueller and that firing Rosenstein or Mueller would bring him far worse.
Despite himself, Comey has been very important to giving us what hope we have. So yeah, we have to overlook his transgressions.

(11,277 posts)I do find it interesting that so many conservative voices are featured here on DU. I'm glad Bill Kristol is taking pot shots at Ill Douche. But I don't give two shits about his opinion about anything else.
TomSlick
(11,109 posts)But so long as he is taking pot shots at the Orange Abomination, I'm happy to watch. He is an important voice among conservatives. We need more like him explaining that the OA is a clear and present danger to the Republic.

(2,850 posts)With anything left of our system of government, we are going to need republican help. We will never have large enough congressional majorities to impeach Trump and convict him in the senate without republicans. We are never going to be able to repair the Trump damage without help from republicans. We have to hope that some of them are capable of waking up when they get smacked in the face with reality.
TomSlick
(11,109 posts)That is also why we must have Republicans - any Republicans - saying that Trump is a danger. We on DU will not convince Republican representative and senators. Maybe - just maybe - their own kind can show them the light. That's why we must praise conservatives on our side of the battle lines against Trump.
My hope is that one day we'll get back to regular politics about regular political issues. The only question worth considering at this point is whether the Republic will survive.
