Know why I think manafort worked for trump for free?

The election was only a couple months away, and when trump won, manafort figured he'd get some kind of security post like some of the others did with access to the country's top secrets.
What better way to make a gazillion bucks than by selling our secrets to putin, which he would be able to do.

That's the only reason I can think of why he would work for free when he sorely needed money.

He was being sued by one of them for money that he owed them - some investment they had made that he was Party to — and after he helped Trump, the oligarch dropped the lawsuits, if I recall correctly.

What better target to loot than the world's largest economy?

This is an extremely long and detailed history of Manafort from The Atlantic:

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/03/paul-manafort-american-hustler/550925/

A key takeaway is that Manafort was deep in debt to some Russians, particularly Oleg Deripaska to whom Manafort owed about $19 million. If he could get close to Trump, he could influence him on behalf of his Russian debtors.

Manafort offered to work for free because it made him Trump's peer rather than employee.

When Manafort offered Trump his services, he resisted his tendency to slap a big price tag on them; he would provide his counsel, he said, free of charge. To his family, Manafort described this decision as a matter of strategy: If Trump viewed him as wealthy, then he would treat him as a near-equal, not as a campaign parasite.

Manafort is a really dark and shady character. It seems clear that his connections to Russians was part of his attraction to Trump. He's going to jail.
