THE BIG IDEA: A president loosely accusing the opposition party of treason represents a greater danger to the long-term health of the American system than a 4.6 percent drop in the Dow Jones industrial average.
President Trump said Monday that it was un-American and treasonous when some congressional Democrats did not applaud during last week's State of the Union address as he touted the low rates of black and Hispanic unemployment.
Even on positive news like that, really positive news like that, they were like death and un-American, Trump said at a manufacturing plant outside Cincinnati. Somebody said treasonous. I mean, yeah, I guess, why not? Shall we call that treason? Why not? I mean, they certainly didnt seem to love our country very much.
-- After the president accused Democrats of treachery, most elected Republicans stayed tight-lipped last night. The only GOP senator who appears to have spoken out at this point is Jeff Flake of Arizona, who is retiring:
Jeff Flake: You don't have to always agree with those on the other side of the aisle, but all members of congress love their country, and none are treasonous. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/02/05/trump-blasts-treasonous-democrats-not-applauding-his-state-union-address/301962002/

(959 posts)to make his own treason a joke, a whatever, I guess so, who really knows thing. Because he knows what he's done, and he knows it's coming to bite him very soon, so he's undercutting the deadly seriousness of the very word.

(17,216 posts)I think some members of Congress are treasonous, but certainly not the ones who refuse to be cheerleaders for the administration.
Whatever you do, don't quote Louis XIV to Mr Trump. If once he hears "L'etat, c'est moi," he'll use it forever.
