(CNN)South Korea has deployed 900 military personnel after 1,200 security guards were pulled from duty following an norovirus outbreak at Winter Olympic facilities in Pyeongchang.
Organizers said 41 security guards had suffered a sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhea on Sunday and had been taken to hospital. The outbreak comes just days before the opening of South Korea's 2018 Winter Olympics on Thursday.
To prevent the spread of the disease, the other guards were withdrawn and replaced with 900 military personnel as of Monday afternoon, a statement from the Pyeongchang Olympics committee said.
"The military personnel ... will be responsible for security checks of the 20 venues as they take up jobs such as security searches, previously done by civilian safety personnel, until the patients' condition is normalized," the statement said.

(8,733 posts)41 guards coming down with the same illness simultaneously seems way to coincidental. I think they are just as concerned about a biological attack as well.

(8,733 posts)If it manifested itself in volunteers and other staff that ate where the guards did but the article doesnt go into that much detail. I agree its possible but those type of details would have been helpful...Ill do some digging to see if anything gives a good explanation as to how and why.

(15,682 posts)How were that many people exposed at the exact same time, not to mention the timing? I mean, yeah, it happens in large numbers in the middle of the ocean on a cruise ship. Or even at large social event where people were all served the same meal.
So what, do all these people live and have meals together?

(58,785 posts)Compared to the numbers of visitors, not a large number but of course concerning. Sounds like pulling out that group of exposed security staff was a good idea.
A Detroit Free Press reporter says he's been getting text alerts from the SK government regarding the norovirus outbreak. He's drinking only beer and wine, a work-related expense for medical reasons.
Another reporter, from SBS News (Australia), just reported being awakened by an emergency text alert, which turned out to be notification of an earthquake and warning of aftershocks, took some while to wake up her translator to find out what the "emergency" was. Large numbers of athletes and others apparently didn't bring their own translator and had no idea what the emergency awaking them from sleep was.
Sounding a bit antsy over there. The Free Press reporter's handling it, though.
