(7,434 posts)who said that he, when he was in the Navy, disobeyed a direct order from a superior. That order was to participate in a post WWII parade in Chicago. He hated the notion of walking in the parade, saw it as nothing more than a pain in the ass. Apparently, someone in the hierarchy agreed. He was honorably discharged about 6 weeks early.

(4,167 posts)This is dumb. And this isnt honoring me. This will make whoever has to participate work longer hours to practice for this parade. Probably over weekends. And then they would have to work on a holiday instead of spending time with their families

(12,682 posts)Was the two day panic when Reagan visited our base - during a heat wave. For some reason (probably because it was right after Granada), his staff wanted "a parade" of all the units assigned to the base on the training grounds. And we were told at the last minute we had to participate.
Unfortunately for me, I still knew my port from my starboard, and remembered the cadence and calls. So I was one of the approximately quarter of the crew who could still execute the drills in enough of a military fashion that I was "volunteered". Two days of drilling for eight hours in full dress white uniform, heels, and the heat.
All so I could stand at attention for 2 hours in front of the hypocritical and demented a-hole who ruined my dad's career as a teacher in California.
I was down sick for a week after that - heat exhaustion.
