A prominent veterans leader just went viral with a brutal response to Trumps military parade plans

Reactions to President Trumps desire for a large-scale military parade on the streets of the nations capital have ranged why it is reminiscent of what authoritarian dictators do to open ridicule to anger over what a gigantic waste of money it would be.
Adam Weinstein, a Navy veteran who is now Senior Editor for the website Task and Purpose, in which military and former service members share ideas and news, covers all those bases and more in an epic rant about what a terrible idea Trump is pushing from the point of view of those who would be forced to march for his inspection.
At a time the stock market is being whiplashed, thousands are dying in the opioid crisis, the suicide rate is up and rural areas are being left behind by politicians and the economy, what does Trump want a parade.
Some American war veterans are facing deportation. Others, with other than honorable discharges, are foundering with next to no help.
And what is Trumps answer: Lets throw a fucking military parade.
Lets do it for the duly elected commander-in-chief, continues Weinstein, who was born on third base and blames the world for not just scoring it as a run. Whose entire military service consists of a private boarding-school diploma and five draft deferments.
Who used the commissioning ceremony of the Coast Guard Academys graduating cadets to bitch about the medias coverage of him, when he wasnt confusing the Coast Guard with the Navy.
Who couldnt stand still or remember the words for the National Anthem at Arlington on Memorial Day, next to his secretary of defense and Joint Chiefs chairman (but hes still pretty sure NFL players of color who dont show sufficient anthem-patriotism should be fired).
Who likes people who werent captured; tells Gold Star families hes made a lot of sacrifices, and calls safe sex in the 1990s my personal Vietnam and blames the generals for battle casualties.
Lets make America a banana republic, concludes Weinstein. Lets have a fucking parade. For Don.
You dont need this. I dont need this. But he sure does.
This outspoken veteran may be over the top in his passion and anger, but he makes valid points and represents many others inside the military, who have served and who never served, when he says at a time America has so many big problems, a parade is not the answer.

Posers and poltroons do not deserve parades.

These people who write articles seem to be scared of putting their full force into their writings, they seem to feel the have to be "balanced" when the other side's actions and words are not balanced at all, they say and do whatever they want and feel they can get away with.
Enough with "political correctness", things must be spelled out, the ears one wants to reach will not understand it unless it is very clear.
Spot on.

(1,077 posts)To me, his wanting a parade is something he saw with the french. It seems to me our limited military parades have been related to a significant national event. And, even then, the parades have been limited in scope.

He wants the world to see the military salute him.

(16,646 posts)That it isn't over the top.
I have to agree. What makes it seem that way is that usually when one goes on a tear like this, it is "over the top", otherwise known as hyperbole. You can take almost anyone in any position of authority and contrast their excesses with their short comings and make them out to be a big buffoon. We saw that with Clinton and Obama. People would pick the actions they liked the least, often ones with which I might actually agree, and attempt to make that the total characterization of them and their administration. It's basically distortion.
But in this case, it isn't distortion. Really, put on your Romeny hat and look at this administration from the point of view of some average conservative republican. You'd have to dig long and hard to find examples of things this administration has done that isn't cringe worthy. Cutting taxes and the SC seat are about it. Maybe some of the deregulation as well. But one can easily sit and start a list of the outrageous, counterproductive, or nonsensical actions and decisions this administration has made and it will be QUITE long. No, it's not distortion, and in reality, it is probably distortion in the opposite direction. It is hard to write a brief description of this administration that does justice to the totality of what they've done and what they are.

(5,738 posts)I watched him make that speech, along with my husband, and we couldn't believe what we heard when Trump said that they will be pleased and thrilled to know that he saved a lot of money on the new fighter jets that were just ordered! The cadets just applauded slightly and politely, but mostly sat there looking baffled.
My husband said, "Does he actually think that the Coast Guard has aircraft carriers?"
Clueless.
