Backwards and in high heels

It was said about Ginger Rogers that she did everything Fred Astaire did, but did it backwards and in high heels.

Fast forward to yesterday, when 77 year old Nancy Pelosi gave the speech of her life and stood in THESE babies for 8 hours straight (albeit not backwards):

As a woman who used to love wearing sky-high heels and knows the pain of standing in a high heel with a pointed toe, I have nothing but RESPECT for this woman!

But not for the hazardous-to-your-health shoe choice.

Those things are a recipe for broken/sprained ankles and permanently shortened achilles tendons.

I was speaking to the question of whether making that choice is one that deserves respect. From my perspective, it doesn't.

I apologize for that - I'm finding my fuse to be shorter than usual these days.

I don't respect the fact that she wore those shoes, but that she COULD. She is tough as nails, physically as well as mentally.

My grandmother who, in her later years, had to wear heels even when all she was doing was sitting in a chair because her achilles tendon was permanently shortened and it was painful, even when relaxing, not to have something molding her foot in that unnatural position. (And since she is someone who had metastatic bone cancer and never complained of pain, that says a lot.)

So suggesting wearing heels like that is a reason to respect someone rubs me the wrong way, because I know pretty directly what kind of damage it does.

I could never wear those even 40 years ago...I'll be 60 in October.
I always preferred flats.

. . . . . tactician and leader. Maybe the best one since LBJ, who was singularly the master at it. (read: Great Society legislation, among other things)

Leader Pelosi is exactly that, a LEADER. They like to joke that get Democrats to work together is like herding cats. Yet, there she is, holding her caucus together time and again.

You bet I respect her.

The last time I wore a shoe like that was at a wedding more than a decade ago (waste of money, only worn once). To each their own.
