Wow. This insanely racist cartoon ran today in the @ABQJournal, my hometown newspaper and the first place I ever worked. The paper has always had a conservative editorial board, but this is next-level.

(13,200 posts)The "accidentally genius" part is the window into the minds of these racist shitstains.
The cartoonist figures he's just throwing out some red meat to keep Republicans churning...
But anyone with the eyes to see can read that toon, see the symbols (the black cats, the rats, the crow), follow the dialog and truly get a glimpse at the fear and loathing that colors every facet of what passes for thought among the lot of them.
Hateful because of their fears, fearful because of their ignorance and ignorant because they choose the easy answer that agrees with what they already believe.

(13,874 posts)#2 would be to complain to the paper, but the best would be to reference the cartoon in going after the paper's advertisers.

(15,805 posts)I just googled up that little factoid. With newspapers fading from the American scene, its kinda beyond stupid for the publisher to deliberately decide that promoting a racist ideology that appeals to white supremacists, and alienating almost half their potential customer base, would be good for business. The paper is not only insulting their own subscribers, but the advertisers who paid for that large readership who might see their ads.

(2,346 posts)We let the the subscription lapse last month but were reconsidering as my husband loves the sports page and generally the routine of grabbing the paper each morning and reading before work etc.
But seeing this disgraceful display of racism seals our decision. We won't resubscribe to the ABQ Journal.

(8,935 posts)Maybe New Mexicans should write the Albq. Journal and let them have it
for propagating hateful stereotypes.
This should be highly offensive to everyone, especially anyone who is of Hispanic descent.
I lived in New Mexico during college years.

(45,547 posts)sounds like they would lose subscribers and advertisers because of this. Dems have the majority of voter registrations there and advertisers might want to keep their customers.
And it doesn't make any sense. Dreamers lose DACA protection if they commit a crime. Crime is still bad when committed by Americans. Why is there a guy standing to the side with a sword and dynamite? After MS-13 robs the nice white people a terrorist will blow himself up in a dark alley at night?

(49,047 posts)This cartoon was two days after cops killed an escaped chimpanzee from a zoo and one day after Obama signed a big economic stimulus bill.

I mostly just read the comics and the sports page. Front section is terrible.

(32,791 posts)...but it bothers me that we're displaying these cartoons on DU.
I wouldn't want anyone to think that we espouse this trash.
Shouldn't there be some kind of banner over the trashy cartoons, telling people that "we don't approve?"
Just sayin'
Ligyron
(7,639 posts)But, I think people need to know what we're up against and to what extent it is being mainstreamed.
FakeNoose
(32,791 posts)I don't believe in censorship, and it's important that we keep DU members informed of "what's out there."
But we also need to recognize that not all site visitors are members of DU or even share our liberal/progressive beliefs.
Some people do copy and share our materials on other websites and it's mostly out of our control.
So, let's take a step back and think this through. How do we feel about people seeing this racist cartoon here?
Does this bother anyone besides me?

(2,970 posts)But the reference to "future Democrats" is too extreme for a mainstream newspaper. (The Journal is Albuquerque's main newspaper and has NM's biggest circulation.)
This cartoon is what passes as humor to conservatives and it belongs on the NRA's web site or on those dark, skanky white-is-right web sites or Breitbart or something. But, not in the Journal.
The Abq Journal does have a somewhat conservative editorial page, but it's otherwise a pretty clean paper news-wise. I'm surprised they'd run something like this, even in the op-ed section.

(5,611 posts)If the cartoon was of African-Americans and depicted them as all belonging to a gang (honey they prefer to be called dreamers...not bloods etc) wouldnt that be an overt and obvious display of racism?

(5,914 posts)From a technical standpoint, this guy is really not too bad. Maybe the editors were busy, and they keyed in on how his cartoons look instead of their actual content.
How someone with such artistic ability could also be such a huge douchebag is something that escapes me. Art springs from empathy. I have never been able to figure out how Richard Wagner could have composed his music. I love Wagner's music and detest him as a person at the same time.
