What's Left of "The Right"?

Over the past few decades, we have seen the Republican party move slowly but surely away from the everything it once stood for.

But with the election of Trump, the GOP has now openly, indeed brazenly, abandoned every principle they once touted as the very core of their political existence.

We have watched as the “party of fiscal responsibility” has become the party of fuck-it-all spendthrifts whose only concern is ensuring that tax-cuts for their wealthy donors are enacted, and the consequences to the country’s financial stability be damned. The self-declared “deficit hawks” are now declaring that deficits don’t matter, debt doesn’t matter, spending ceilings don’t matter, so long as the money flows into the right pockets.

The GOP’s “religious right” has gone from denouncing adultery, pornography, lewdness and promiscuity to lauding a “pResident” who bragged about grabbing pussies, a “pResident” whose past is littered with women who have accused him of sexual assault/molestation. The “Christian leaders” the Republicans once pointed to as the stalwart judges of Christian behaviour now praise a “pResident” who has cheated, lied, and stolen from hard-working Americans his entire life. The Evangelicals who held themselves out as above reproach when it comes to interpreting the will of God now hold the “pResident” out as being chosen by God himself to lead a nation.

The “law and order party” now turns a blind eye to the criminal activities of their “pResident” and his colleagues. They simply dismiss the indisputable facts that continue to emerge about his dealings with our enemies, and turn a blind eye to those in his administration that have already been indicted, as well as those currently being investigated.

The ”We LOVE Our Military” party now ignores the plight of those who served – the homeless vets, the injured vets, the men and women who put their very lives in jeopardy to defend their nation and are now bereft of the assistance they need when their service is no longer required.

The “compassionate conservatives” now brag about their lack of compassion when it comes to deporting Dreamers, and cutting funds for social services that millions of Americans rely on to survive. There is no compassion – or anything resembling compassion – among those who are trying to tear families apart, and those who are doing everything in their power to deny healthcare to their fellow citizens.

While racism has long been a subtle under-current among Republicans, they are now blatant in their support of a “pResident” who called white supremacists and KKK members “very fine people”, and has declared immigrants from predominantly brown-and-black countries as being undesirable because they come from “shithole countries”.

The party of “lofty ideals” is now the party devoted to a man who has lied to the American people every single day since his inauguration, and has staffed his administration with inexperienced, incompetent people whose only qualification is being a family member, or an ass-kissing sycophant willing to swear loyalty to Trump over loyalty to country.

All of the above – and much more – brings us to the inevitable question: Exactly what is left of the Grand Ol’ Party? What values are still extant? What principles are still being observed? What rules are still being abided by?

The answer is obvious. The Republican party has abandoned whatever values, principles, or rules they once touted as being the foundation upon which their party was built. They have discarded every pretence of common decency, as well as every pretence of common sense. They have walked away from every virtue they traditionally laid claim to, and every truth they once proclaimed themselves as holding sacrosanct.

What is left of the Grand Old Party, our “friends across the aisle”, our loyal opposition, is a cesspool of greed, ineptitude, and hypocrisy so self-serving it is beyond mind-boggling.

The ultimate irony is that they’ve abandoned their heretofore much-touted principles to support a “pResident” who stands for everything they themselves once claimed to abhor.

hate for our country. They hate the US and all it has ever stood for. That is why they don't care about destroying it for power and profit.

I have wondered too, what is left of the Republican party. We sure know what they are against and very damned little what they are for.

Goldwater once said, "I don't care if a soldier is straight as long as he can shoot straight."

I'm sure we would disagree on abortion and many other things, but at least you could talk to GOPers of that era. Now they're all scorched earth, "Dems backa da bus" shit.

We on DU won't forget, but many people who pay little attention to the news will. We can use your column to remind them why they need to vote.

PS - Nance, your writings are some of the best political commentary currently being written. It has been obvious for months that the entire leadership of the Republican party is in bed with Putin, but our political pundits either cannot or will not report it. Maybe it is beyond their ability to believe what is right before their eyes, that we now have an actual "Manchurian candidate" president.

One thing I didn't see in this excellent piece is the fact that so many appointees are chosen for their zealous opposition to the agency they are intended to head. Many of the GOPers appear to be on a quest to destroy our government.

Or was it always just a front for the greed and hatred? One of the things that has always drove me nuts about the republican party is the oozing hypocrisy. Do as I say, not as I do because I'm so much better and smarter then you.

Everyone here as always seen them for what they really are. We knew there was a old creepy white man behind the mask the whole time. They have definitely had to expose themselves for this last hoorah but maybe they've read the progressive writing on the wall and just taking what they can get before heading to their gated bunkers. Too bad for us and all their voters that will be left outside in the cold.
