Given gerrymandering, time-tested voter suppression tactics, "broken" voting machines and "lost" votes, and a little help from their friend Vladimir, we might end up with an added two years to the current insanity.
I honestly don't believe we can survive two more years of Trump/Vladimir/Republican misrule. I believe we will plunge into full blown fascism.
So here's the reality. We win either the House, the Senate, (preferably both), or American democracy is over.

(13,811 posts)It will Trump the power he needs to control all the branches of the government! He will turn a democracy into the dictatorship he wants badly! It is peril that the Democrats take as many seats as they can, our lives depend on them!

(6,377 posts)There's no way you'd get enough Republicans on board in the Senate to reach 60.
And although it's likely Democrats take back the house, the numbers aren't good for the Senate just because of the sheer number of seats we have to defend. Not to say the possibility isn't there, just that it's unlikely to happen.

(5,530 posts)The political environment is in our favor but the structural underpinnings are not. All the things you mention plus the Senate positions up for election this round make it a severe uphill climb. To capture both, we would essentially have to overwhelm those long odds with brute force.
It will come down to the economy like it always does. If the stock market stays up he wins. If the stock market retreats, he loses.
It is a crazy way to measure success but voters are shallow and self-interested. The rest is background noise to them.
