For most of the sports the teams are picked by who wins, or who is in the top two, or three. However, I believe the selection of Adam Rippon, who is gay, was slightly controversial in that he came in fourth, but was picked over the second place finisher. However, U.S. Figure Skating and U.S. Gymnastics routinely disregard the final standings at the Olympic trials.

Diversity at elite levels reflects diversity of the population and interest in a particular sport or opportunity to participate.
