Republicans have devised a new sinister way to cut Social Security

Republicans have devised a new sinister way to cut Social Security
Liz Posner, AlterNet/Rawstory 10 FEB 2018 AT 07:47 ET

They’re a cunning lot, these elected Republican officials. In their latest plot to revoke the fundamental benefits that have saved millions of seniors from falling into poverty, Republicans are now looking for ways to bribe Americans into forgoing their government-guaranteed retirement security.

Case in point: Ivanka Trump and Marco Rubio recently unveiled their plan to provide parental leave to Americans who choose to postpone retirement age and forgo Social Security payments. It’s a clear attempt to chip away at Social Security, a long-standing target of the GOP.

Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works, expressed dismay with the plan, saying, “It’s well past time for our country to join the rest of the world in providing workers with paid family and medical leave. But we should not undermine our retirement security to achieve it.”

This isn’t the first time Republicans have suggested Americans cut into their future Social Security benefits to pay for immediate needs. Rep. Tom Garrett’s similarly ridiculous proposal to “solve” the student debt crisis would allow young people struggling with college loan debt to stall their Social Security benefits until later on in life in exchange for loan forgiveness.

more millionaires and billionaires than ever before in the history of the United States, and the capital gains tax is now among the lowest ever in history, that the GOP wants to claim that this country is looking at poverty and thus must cut benefits all across the board.

Christian, aren't they? They are also among the first to pretend shock at this kind of accusation by DUers and the like. Like you in DU land, I'm tired of this worn out and overused excuse.

Lower the tax rate significantly for most Americans and implement a progressive tax rate that taxes less, as more income from ALL sources is made. E.g., if > $1 million to $5 million, tax at 20%, if > $5 million to $10 million, tax at 15%, etc. Quit making swords and instead, snowplows and the like. There's no one in the world that we need to really worry about today, except little bitty dictators, which doesn't mandate running a trillion dollar military by any means. I guarantee you that History shows that adversaries of the US found out the hard way in attacking the U.S.

This way, incentives are still in place for upper wage earners. Government wins, and they win, and we win. Everyone wins! Also, don't limit social security taxes on earnings, tax all earnings. If they had done this decades ago when this issue came up, we would have this issue resolved for generations.

Guess who stopped it then? It starts with 'G', then an 'O', and finally a 'P'!
