Tea-party operative denied bail on sex charges

SALT LAKE CITY — A judge is refusing to lower the $750,000 bail for a conservative political activist facing 25 rape and other charges.

Peterson is being held at Salt Lake County jail on charges accusing him of assaulting four women — two at his cabin outside of Heber, where he has held annual gatherings for Republican officeholders and candidates. Peterson also organized a debate between two GOP candidates for Utah attorney general.

An evidence hearing in the case was scheduled for Friday before Judge Judith Atherton.

Utah Republican Chairman Thomas Wright tells The Associated Press that Peterson is a self-styled tea-party operative who has never held a leadership position or raised or donated money for the state party.

A judge on Wednesday denied a bail reduction for Republican activist Gregory Nathan Peterson, who is accused of sexually assaulting four women whom he had asked out on dates.

Peterson, 37, is being held at the Salt Lake County jail in lieu of $750,000 bail.

"To say that Mr. Peterson is eager to appear in court and clear his name is an understatement," Tangaro said.

Deputy Salt Lake County District Attorney Joseph Hill countered: "He’s shown a complete lack of ability to control his sexual urges."

Hill claimed the bail amount was reasonable and not arbitrary.

With the bail reduction denied, Peterson’s attorneys asked for a preliminary hearing within 10 days.

Just a little comic relief.

All kidding aside, the fact the the judge is female means a lot here. She doesn't take rape as lightly as the Teabagger Rapist seems to do.

Utah tea party activist Greg Peterson accused of multiple rapes

Life sentence possible » In two cases, Gregory N. Peterson is suspected of taking victims to a cabin in Heber.

A Utah Republican activist is accused of raping four women — two of whom say they were taken to the Heber cabin where the man hosted major political events.

Gregory Nathan Peterson, 37, of Orem, was charged Wednesday 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City with 23 felony counts, including rape and kidnapping, and two misdemeanors. A jail log indicates U.S. marshals arrested Peterson in his home in Heber and booked him into the Salt Lake County jail. He remained there Thursday in lieu of $750,000 bail.

Charging documents allege sexual assaults against four women Peterson met in Salt Lake County beginning March 26, 2011. In the first case, the documents allege, he met a woman at a church function and she agreed to go to a movie with him.

On Peterson’s Facebook page, he describes himself as the owner of Peterson Wealth Management and features a photo of him meeting GOP presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Another photo shows an invitation to a Romney fundraiser that he co-chaired on Nov. 17, 2007 in Park City, Utah.

His most recent Facebook post was at 3:49 p.m. on Wednesday with an image of a spider in a web. The photo mocked a recent speech by President Obama with the text “Nice Web. You Didn’t Build That.”

None of the alleged crimes appear to be directly connected to Peterson’s political activities or the candidates he hosted fundraisers for.
