Everyone hoped that General Kelly would rub off on Donald Trump. Instead, Donald Trump has rubbed off on General Kelly.

(46,763 posts)Turns out he has always been an asshole. In the Trump White House, he gets the opportunity to put his assholery on public display. Talk about an "empty barrel".
In Trump world they normalize his crazy so much that they forget to keep their mask on. As bad as he is Kelly is still probably the only adult anywhere near Trump and the White House. That doesnt augur well for the rest of us.

(5,210 posts)which means before Trump. He was HORRIBLE at DHS, because he's an inveterate racist (and misogynist). But everyone just assumed because he was a general he had to be this upstanding wonderful guy. Nonsense. NONSENSE.

General Kellys aggressive oversight of the illegal military prison at Guantánamo Bay disqualifies him to head the Department of Homeland Security. Presiding over a population of detainees not charged or convicted of crimes, over whom he had maximum custodial control, Kelly treated them with brutality. His response to the detainees peaceful hunger strike in 2013 was punitive force-feeding, solitary confinement, and rubber bullets. Furthermore, he sabotaged efforts by the Obama administration to resettle detainees, consistently undermining the will of his commander in chief. His temperament and actions make him unfit to lead an agency that currently holds tens of thousands of immigrants, including many fleeing violence and many in long-term indefinite detention.
Kellys recent vow to end political correctness in U.S. national security policy is a thinly veiled endorsement of policies and practices that are illegal and immoral, including torture and racial and religious profiling. His statement is a clear warning sign, and the Senate must reject his nomination to preserve and protect the rule of law.

(6,045 posts)However, I dont think Trump rubbed off on Gen. Kelly I think we are just seeing the REAL Gen. Kelly. The media, people in Congress & other military officials knew him as a General in the US Military where there is firm structure & the focus is on a clearly defined mission.
However, there were strong hints that Gen. Kelly was a racist & had an irrational hatred of Muslims through comments he made before joining Trumps administration. Plus, I think I read yesterday while in the military he also defended others who were accused of sexual misconduct.
Of course, this depends on if Im not confusing one scumbag Trump aide/cabinet member for another.

(1,325 posts)America is too easily fooled by a military uniform. Kelly, Mattis, and McMaster are each in their own way disastrous. Kelly's warts are obvious. Mad Dog Mattis is a butcher - check out his words and see his assaults on Fallujah. And Dereliction of Duty McMaster has had a front row seat and leading role in the disasters that we have unleashed since 2001. Ass-kissers one and all who "stay the course" and follow the orders of the president. Men without principle, these idiots are just fawning frauds running drumpf's praetorian guard. And the media just falls all over these idiots ad nauseam. If truth be told (and no, "we" apparently can't handle the truth) each should be on trial for being the war criminals they are. Spineless bunch of sycophants are not the adults in the room.

(23,344 posts)off on millions of Americans. Look at the rise in violent crime against people of color, the LBGTQ community, women, immigrants just to mention a few. Hell, the White House has a whole line up of folks willing to go on the record to defend domestic abusers. He hasnt just rubbed off on people...he is a lethal contagion.
