Jeff Sessions Is Making Congress Mad With His Pot Policy, And It May Backfire

“It has awakened a sleeping giant,” Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher told BuzzFeed News.

If Attorney General Jeff Sessions hoped his latest encroachments on marijuana would make politicians back away from legalization, it’s not working.

Last Monday, three weeks after Sessions gave federal prosecutors wide berth to begin marijuana busts in states where it’s legal, Phil Scott, the Republican governor of Vermont, signed a bill making Vermont the ninth state to legalize the drug.

The strongest pushback against the Trump administration’s new marijuana policy, however, seems to be in Congress — where dozens of lawmakers are pushing legislation that would handcuff Sessions on pot.

Ironically, Sessions is sparking more enthusiasm for recreational marijuana on Capitol Hill than any time in Congress’s modern history.

“It has awakened a sleeping giant,” Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher said of the way politicians are reacting to Sessions repealing the Cole memorandum, a policy from the Obama administration that tolerated pot companies in states that legalized the drug.

Think about being a Republican member of congress just now, and having to defend the nutball statements that ooze out of this White House plus the immorality of the current Republican leadership. You have to go out and repeat things you know are completely loony, but pretend they are sound policy, even when they are a complete flip from what you said previously. Of course they are using recreational drugs to cope! Wouldn't you?

might put the legalization of cannabis for adult use on the 2018 ballot in the form of a voter referendum. Gawd I hope so. Percentage of 👍 is 61. That number could go even “higher,” pun not intended.

The same was said of Robert Ehrlich and we know how that went. 👍 If cannabis legalization is on the ballot it would definitely help Ben Jealous.

one would see why he still is doing his WAR on Drugs. The cat is out of the bag now, and the stuff is natural so it can't be OWNED like they did with Tobacco.

I'd give it about 50/50 in the House. The Evangelicals would vote it down, but I think if you are in a state where it's legal, you vote it down at your peril.

...and I think there are a lot of law-and-order Republicans you could still sell the issue to using the "shouldn't the states and not the federal government make these decisions" argument.
