February 14, 2018 at 5:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard
Wade Perry, the manager of Doug Jones (D) longshot U.S. Senate campaign in Alabama, told McClatchy that before Jones even won his own primary, and hatched a plan with campaign chairman Giles Perkins. Their realization: the campaign needed to show Republican voters some of whom hadnt voted for a Democrat in decades that it would be OK to support one this time around.
And what better way, they thought, than letting the average Alabamian see rows of Jones signs in their neighbors yards?
Perry himself can scarcely believe hes talking about them seriously But the man who managed the most stunning upset in recent Democratic political history has a larger and much more important point he wants to make; his party must be willing to try something different with their politics and campaigns, especially as it prepares to compete this November in a litany of Republican-rich areas.

(21,107 posts)1. I can tell you from a first person viewpoint that it was GREAT
and very heartening to see all those DOUG JONES signs in yards and on the sides of the streets. Hell, I saw one yesterday. Made me feel wonderful.

(60,010 posts)4. In my lil town, people don't seem to be using yard signs anymore.
Discrete bumper/car tags show up sometimes, but my neighborhood does not show hardly any signs.
People seem more reluctant to put them out after Obama left office.

Can't win if you don't run, and running means advertising. I've always wondered how many of those roadside Trump signs were paid for by the campaign.

(8,380 posts)3. I believe it. In my very red part of Virginia, just seeing the number of "Northam for Governor"
signs was heartening. Sure, he "lost" my town and county, but my blue vote and every blue vote from every blue voter here, the whole 25% of us, added to the votes statewide and he won handily.
