I was shocked and appalled watching some of the coverage this morning with all the speakers.
The sheriff seemed to really like speaking in front of the camera, and spoke at some length about HIS great idea for solving this problem (or improving it, anyway) --
He was asking for law enforcement to have the power to force those who have shown dangerous inclinations on social media to have a mental health evaluation.
Force people, against their will.
Needless to say, this would be a terrible affront to the 4th Amendment, but also a terrible weapon in the hands of people who shouldn't have such power. Like fascists and the people who willingly follow them.
So I freaked out when Trump promoted mental health as the need in his sickening speech this morning. And I've read here that that's Sessions' line as well.
Something else to be very concerned and wary about.

(13,903 posts)the Gestapo come out and violate your civil rights and (conveniently) take you in "for your own well being". (wink, wink). Have a grudge......report him or her. Local politician has a rival....report him or her.

(4,429 posts)(well, more than once - but this once was terrible).
The teen had images of killing people, depicted in blood. He had a vague plan with real opportunity - and ability - and more that I won't say.
They held him for oh, 8 hours - did NOT give him a comprehensive evaluation (I wanted a 3 day hold and psy. testing).
Instead, I got a psychiatrist who took one look at a kid they didn't want to contain on an inpatient unit (they like those chronic low-key schizophrenics
not a powerful teenager who could be difficult to manage on a milieu. She said: Are you okay, do you have good plans for today?
He said he wanted to get discharged and go to work.
I ended up getting him major support outside, including a different psychiatrist - one would understood him and what he needed - and case management. But I'm old and know how to work a system.
I don't know if he's okay (he didn't do anything while I had him on my caseload)
but make no mistake: the system let him walk in HOURS. I was livid

(17,006 posts)It's the Baker Act which allows for an up to 72 hour involuntary commitment of someone if there is an imminent threat of them harming themselves or others. Police can Baker Act someone and transport them to a mental health crisis stabilization unit. It is up to the receiving facility to ensure the person meets criteria for being Baker Acted. A licensed psychiatrist must do an eval within 72 hours.

(5,210 posts)I assure you I didn't dream it.
Perhaps what he's talking about didn't fit "imminent threat of them harming themselves or others" since he was talking about social media posts and the like. That's not usually about an "imminent threat." Do you think that's it?

(17,006 posts)he's also a fucking moron. Anything but get rid of the guns because you know, everybody needs a military style assault weapon. Florida has weather like Cali and politics like Alabama.

Looking good, sounding good, have we seen this before?

(16,928 posts)I like the idea - but we need to apply it a bit differently.
Let's say you're required to get that "evaluation" when you apply for a permit to buy a gun!
No eval - no gun.
Yeah, I know, it DOES seem to make too much sense to be practical, doesn't it?
