Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe owners of the store that sold Cruz the gun are "distraught."
What I understand is that was answered appropriately, said Kaplan, who is a lawyer with Palm Beach Gardens-based Kaplan and Parker. I think the bigger question is: We know that he suffered from some sort of mental health illness. I guess we need to decide or find out whether or not he was being treated ...and I think that loophole is whether or not a mental health professional who is treating an individual should have some sort of reporting requirement or is there some sort of database that would collect this information so that in an event that a particular person would go to purchase a weapon, we could at least screen them?
The shop, whose displays had been stripped of any rifles or other guns Thursday evening, will remain closed indefinitely.
Its owners, who live in Coral Springs, are distraught, Rudman said.
The tremendous sense of responsibility in this situation and just horribleness that they feel that one of their weapons fell into the hands of this maniac, Rudman said. They are scared not just for their safety but more importantly about how the reaction is going to be for the rest of the community as they try to reenter it.

Interesting. They've stripped their displays of gun glory... and they're closed indefinitely. You might think these owners feel a bit of shame.

(26,343 posts)Tactical in the name of your store and you are surprised one of your guns killed civilians? Fuck off, store owners. I hope the faces of those dead kids and adults haunt you to your dying day.

(14,167 posts)If only the people in that school had the luxury of feeling anything, period. The decision to carry and sell that weapon to an 18 year old had severe consequences.
I also found it interesting that this shop had only been open 4 years -- a fairly short time. A more experienced gun retailer may have performed a bit more diligence instead of just processing paperwork to make a sale.

(304 posts)give all the cash they collected from the assets to the families of the 17 dead.
Then the owners needs to turn themselves in as being complicit to the murder.

(12,595 posts)It happens every time there's a mass shooting. There's a fear that assault weapons will be outlawed, so better grab one now.
Also, Smith & Wesson's parent company closed higher after the Florida shooting.
It's become predictable:
1. Horrifying mass murder using easily available assault weapon
2. Initial shock and horror, followed closely by
3. "Thoughts and prayers"
4. Calls for Congress/president to do something
5. GOP: "To soon to have this discussion"
6. Trump tweets: "It's the victims' fault. They should be suspicious of everyone."
7. Trump reads from the teleprompter something written for him which should sound presidential, but he delivers it so stiffly his animatronic doppelganger at Disney World could do it with more empathy.
8. Gun stores sell out on weapons and ammo
9. Gun manufacturers' stock prices go up
10. Ultimately nothing changes, and the NRA wins again.
Wash, rinse repeat.

(24,051 posts)...or has been treated for a mental health problem is going to answer "yes" to those questions when background checks are being run? Given that is seems to be generally regarded as a sign of weakness or deficiency to have emotional health problems, at least in the US, I would think it very likely for people to less than forthcoming when answering those particular questions.

(5,101 posts)They said distraught ?
They destroyed 17 families about to bury a child, a father, a brother, a sister, they plunged countless persons in a nightmare, many will never get over, will live or more like survive under meds, will need psychological assistance, some might ending committing suicide because they can't deal with the memories of this day, and so on...
But THEY are distraught ?
In a country where mass shooting are occurring at an alarming pace ?
They, as well as their siblings are complicit ! They are not selling toys or candies !

Most of us use these little gismos for less dramatic purposes. For example, when combined with a large capacity magazine, the semi-automatic features of this sleek modern gadget provide a convenient source of ballistic spray that can deployed effectively against the flies and mosquitoes that ruin so many summer cookouts. There is nothing more American than a Memorial Day or Fourth of July picnic in the park, and the AR-15 is the perfect tool for blowing insects way from food and family

(32,731 posts)Come on now. I think they closed to hide evidence.
They sold weapons of war. Killing machines. Surely they anticipated at least one person would be killed by a gun sold in their store.
Just my humble opinion, of course.

(13,081 posts)They might as well have called the business Murder Weapon Emporium. Those people are responsible for god knows how many deaths; statistically speaking, several of their customers have already committed suicide.
Most people wont just find another way to do it, except we have decades of research disproving the assertion.
And it probably hadnt occurred to them that their livelihoods are based entirely on murder. Maybe peoplee, maybe animals. They, like some DUers, havent connected the dots between target practice and homicide. Its got the word practice right in the name, and the practice isnt about getting good enough to hit a paper target.
