(14,887 posts)conversation with Sheriff Scott Israel last night. Sheriff Israel spoke of his friendship with a coach who was killed. His other remarks about gun control were sincere and thoughtful. I was impressed with his depth of his conversation. (Beats my local sheriff)

(10,303 posts)But he is stating the obvious... argue for the status quo right now in Broward County with respect to 2A and gun rights in general... lose the election.
The problem is that the electorate has a very short memory. If this was a shooting in October then it would be fresh on election day. This is February. This will sadly be a distant memory come the midterm elections and we will have been successfully distracted by other Republican (and possibly some Democratic) shiny objects passed our way.

(49,045 posts)The right to bear arms is not unlimited. Lines have been drawn.
Tightening the lines to eliminate AR-15s and their ilk is simply drawing the line more rationally.
People can still hunt and fish and "protect" their families without AR-15s.

(37,748 posts)Cigarette smoking went from almost half the population to just under a fifth in 35 years due to effective public campaigns. National drunk driving campaigns resulted in a dramatic reduction as well.
Change is possible if the national will is created or already present.

(2,580 posts)big factor was/is cost, I quit when a pack was $1.50- now $7-10.
Your argument for taxing guns to extinction could be validated.

(49,045 posts)Gun owners collectively should pay the healthcare, disability care, pain and suffering, policing costs, court costs, extra security costs, lost income, and other costs fully accounted for that result from shootings with any gun anywhere anytime. Then let them try to recover that from the actual perpetrators.
