In the aftermath of the election Jill Stein started a fund raising campaign for recounts in 3 states. There was a big push right here on DU to donate. Question: do you think this could have been Russians infiltrating DU?

(19,611 posts)I'm not quite sure of what you are driving at.
I'm a bit slow when it comes to subtle nuance, further explanation would be very helpful.

(8,419 posts)she raised the money, then basically walked away.
And to answer the OP, yes I thought at the time that was her final payoff from Putin.

(108,990 posts)because in one of the three states she had ALREADY missed the key deadline. (And all three states would have to be flipped in order for Hillary to win.)
When money started pouring in, she doubled and then tripled the amount she said was necessary. And at the end, when her partial recounts had been completed, she had millions left over -- that she got to keep for future election activities.

A federal candidate can't keep money they raised for any personal use. It has to be used for future campaigns or donated to other campaigns or similar organizations. When a campaign is terminated it still has to file with the FEC until there is no money left in its account. The campaign organizations of Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bush, Kerry, McCain, Romney and Obama are still filing with the FEC.

(3,335 posts)discussion board. The Exit Polling results that we find acceptable in every other corner of the world pointed to the tallied votes not adding up. People on this board were too busy blaming one another to do anything but accept defeat. So when Jill Stein started a fund for a recount I and many others contributed, and I'd do it again knowing if the facts were the same. If you didn't participate; nothing lost, nothing gained. But you don't have a right to tell the rest of us what to do with our own money.

(108,990 posts)the recounts as a way to possibly flip those three states -- and the whole election.
However, she waited to start the fund drive till after the key deadline in PA had passed. So it was a foregone conclusion she wouldn't get a full recount there -- and that there was no possibility then of flipping all three states. But she kept on fundraising, and kept on pretending she could succeed, as long as she could get people to write those checks.

(841 posts)I can't make up my mind if Stein is a dupe of the Russians or actively worked with them. The Russians did support her campaign though as a way to get liberals to vote for her but I am not sure if she was personally aware of this.
