Turn on any talk radio station and theres a 20-1 chance its supporting the NRA and making sure Republican politicians will not dare to cooperate with Democrats on gun control.
Their talk show hosts are well versed in all the excuses, rationalizations, lies, and distortions the base uses to deny reality and facts and keep their politicians in line.
NRA contributions are part of the problem too, but without an enabling constituency to point their fingers at many of those politicians would merely look like bought politicians instead of patriotic supporters of the second amendment. Take away the money and they would still get screamed at by gun nuts who think their kids should be able to own AR15s.
More than 260 of those stations, many of the loudest in the country, depend on 88 major universities to keep broadcasting sports on them. The stations parasitize the universitys community image and credibility to attract advertisers to pay for explaining away another massacre as the result of liberal media-inspired moral rot and lack of religion in government-controlled schools.
To send the NRA and Republicans a message there may be no better places to protest than those schools.
If the KKK or the NRA bought the radio station the school broadcast sports on, would the school have any excuse not to tell the licensing company to look for apolitical alternatives?
There is no excuse, and the only reason those schools keep supporting the NRA is because their students, faculty, employees and the communities around them have no clue how important those radio stations are for making a rational national discussion about gun control impossible.
And as far as money goes, if the NRA was going to pay $1000/hour for radio infomercial time those schools endorse almost $20MIL/WEEK worth of anti gun control propaganda.
While they dont work for the NRA all the time they do work for the GOP all the time, helping elect Republicans who serve the NRA.
And right now, to avoid talking about Trump and Putin and Russian money funneled through the NRA to Republicans they are doing a LOT of pro NRA talk.
$1000 x 15 hrs/day x 5 days/wk = $75,000/week PER STATION.
Total 260 stations x $75,000 = $19,500,000/WEEK making excuses for the NRA.
Thats about $1BIL/year FREE, endorsed by these universities, on stations that need those universities to keep making no effort to look for alternatives.
Look at Florida 20 NRA stations in that state sell their NRA messaging while waving the sports banners of 5 Florida universities.
