We see a young child speaking directly to camera 'Mom (Dad), please stop smoking! I don't want you to die!!'
The constant bombardment was extremely effective.
Why not a similar campaign against guns??
IIRC after a while the campaign was run by the Ad Council as a public service.
The problem would be cost and getting cable, etc to run the ads. (I think the campaign was before the dominance of tv by the cable compaies.)

(4,220 posts)I totally forgot about those ads but they were probably effective.

Every time I've gone to Germany I've been stunned at how much people smoke. I hadn't realized how much smoking had died out in US until I went to Europe.

(16,342 posts)Was the result of very effective public policy.
We should limit gun advertising, including trade associations, expand the use of PSAs, and consider increasing taxes, by state if necessary, on weapon purchases.
Bringing back the "assault weapon ban" could also help. Gun manufacturers know how to market their "product" to kids by dressing up guns with added on stuff just like cig companies did with promotions like Joe Camel.
It's got to stop.

(1,896 posts)It's generally understood that the deranged old fart who owns the place just hates the competition. Still, if you want a gun store owner to make an anti-gun ad on the horrors of gun shows, Bill Carter is your guy. Somebody in a position to make the ad should approach him.
