The peril of being a loner?

I think that it was after the shooting at Virginia Tech that some caring individuals on these pages express their concerns that if a young man or a boy (usually) is different, prefers to keep to himself, does not participate in school activity, perhaps even have "bizarre" hobbies (whatever they are) may be suspected as a mass shooter.

I am not a social worker but I wonder whether these suspicious have gotten worse. Or not. I don't have the answers but with all the blames on the FBI not responding to the Florida shooter suspicious activities... how much will simple loners, out of the crowd would be targeted?

Just asking..

My brother and all his friends used to wear trenchcoats/dusters to school every day. Then the day after Columbine, they were all sent to the guidance counsellor even though none of them ever wore a long coat again.

One of many reasons I would hate to be a teen today. Metal detectors in schools are bad enough but feeling that you were constantly monitored for any kind of deviant behaviour...

And you just know there are parts of the country where the "grown ups" at school equate deviant with not Christian.

I believe the tip came from a person close to the shooter and concerned his obsession with guns and killing people, not his status as a 'loner'

.... Someone who spotted the comment reported it to the FBI for follow up to investigate the veracity of the comment and if it was indeed a meaningful threat to be of concern and not just some kid running his mouth off.

Suspicious. Lots of people prefer to keep to themselves. I really hope people don't start screaming out "witch!" just because someone doesn't talk or interact much.

Now, seeing/hearing someone talk about killing is a whole nother thing.
