Nikolas Cruz was living with Kimberly and James Snead at the time of the school shooting. The Sneads were interviewed by the Sun Sentinel.
The couple both grew up around guns and are comfortable with them, but they insist on gun safety.
They made Cruz buy a locking gun safe to put in his room the day he moved in. Cruz had a handful of guns, including the AR-15 and two other rifles that Snead said would be considered assault rifles. Cruz, a hunter, also had knives, BB guns and pellet guns.
Snead thought he had the only key to the cabinet but has figured out Cruz must have kept a key for himself. The family kept their own rifles, bought after a burglary a couple of years ago, in a separate locked cabinet.
They told Cruz he needed to ask permission to take out the guns. He had asked only twice since November. They said "yes" once and "no" once.

Interesting read.
Cruz sent several texts to the Sneads' son who attended Stoneman Douglas while he was en route to carry out his massacre. In one text Cruz asked the Sneads' son which classroom he was in.
Cruz had seen a therapist at the suggestion of Mrs. Snead 5 days before he killed 17 people. He said he was looking into how much his insurance would cover before committing to ongoing therapy.
The Sneads described him as naive and said his deceased mother had "cosseted' him.
Cruz told the Sneads he stood to inherit $800,000 from his mother's estate.

(102,370 posts)people and clearly did not have a long term, deeply intimate relationship with a boy they tried to befriend after his mother's death.
While I would never have allowed his guns in my house, it appears they tried to do the right thing to control the situation and it is not at all clear they had any idea of the problems with Cruz that his Mother had faced.
No good deed goes unpunished, it appears. This is just devastating for all.

(102,370 posts)I am certain this family is struggling with the horror of their best intentions already.
You seem absolutely devoid of compassion for those who make mistakes despite their best intentions.

(68,686 posts)This family failed him. He should never have been permitted access to guns and needed mental health treatment. It was all over facebook what he intended to do. Sorry they were irresponsible and people are dead because of it.

(102,370 posts)or what we would do at all is one thing. This family did not pull the trigger. They did not purchase the guns for him. They did not raise him.
There is PLENTY of blame to go around and accusing me or others who extend a TINY bit of compassion to this family of NOT having compassion for the 17 dead is beyond reprehensible.

(68,686 posts)certainly called out the family who took him and allowed him to keep his guns.

(68,686 posts)stuff. He had a key to the lockbox containing his gun or guns. If you take in a kid, you have responsibilities...you don't give a troubled kid access to a gun. They talk a good game but actions speak louder than words.

(13,225 posts)Cruz obviously wanted to kill people. A locked gun safe didn't stop him and you have to wonder if the family refused to allow him to bring the guns into the house if he still would have found a way to stash his guns somewhere else or get a gun somewhere else.
The problem is the fact that this country is awash with guns and there is next to NOTHING done to keep them out of the hands of people who have no business accessing them.

(20,006 posts)in the case exposing as ridiculous the idea that reliance on "mental health solutions" will ever be effective in preventing mass murders.
