They are child massacres. And we should ask our representatives and neighbors, and friends if they are for or against child massacres. Doing nothing = being pro child massacres. There's no wiggle room here because it's painfully obvious the current trajectory leads only to more young lives being sacrificed on the altar of the 2nd Amendment.
I get the sense that to a lot of Americans (the ones in favor of virtually limitless gun rights) this is all a philosophical exercise. Kids are getting massacred regularly and most Americans are standing by - even though I am sure they feel bad about it before they forget about it and go on with their lives.
The brave high schoolers from this most recent massacre have already stood up and walked out, and so have others elsewhere in the country. This needs to be encouraged. I really hope high schoolers will stage more walkouts and would love to see a national multi-day walkout. Even better would be if they would skip school to descend on their local representatives' offices to demand action, because I don't know what else will spark action.
I am calling these child massacres going forward. I just can't accept the prevalence of euphemisms like "school shootings" and "active shooter situation" anymore. It's a war situation. Kids watched classmates bleed out or have their face shot off, and it merits calling a spade a spade.

(30,817 posts)I agree. Language has an effect, and that used to describe mass killings is too sterile, too void of emotion.

(949 posts)Short and descriptive. And "massacre" invokes the imagery of war, which is appropriate. Yes, it's murder, but on the scale of war, thanks to assault weapons (even though gun nutters will quickly tell you that AR-15s aren't really assault weapons).

(6,856 posts)Civilians killed, that there are gun nuts who go to the range and fantasize about mowing down "elitists" and "globalists." Some deplorables, like Cruz, have openly declared war on us; others just sit back and quietly aid and abet, using second amendment as their cover. Second Amendment is just a useful deflection like States Rights. Since we are at war, using words like Child Massacre can win back some of those who have been led to back the killers by permitting loose gun laws. Winning the war of words is essential.

(949 posts)We've got to stop aiding and abetting the use of wonky language in the face of these child massacres with Kid Killer guns.
