MSD High School's JROTC Program Helped Train Nikolas Cruz Using a $10K NRA Grant!

.

According to the following ThinkProgress article, The NRA donated $10,000 to help train the Parkland shooting suspect to use a rifle, Nikolas Cruz was partially trained as a team member of MSD's own school marksmanship program.

Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old who charged with murdering 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, honed his marksmanship skills in a school program supported by the NRA. Cruz was, according to the Associated Press, a member of the school’s four-person varsity marksmanship team, which received a $10,000 grant from the NRA in 2016.

The marksmanship team was part of the schools’ JROTC program. On the team, Cruz trained with “air rifles special-made for target shooting, typically on indoor ranges at targets the size of a coin.”

Cruz discussed his AR-15 with other team members and was given the nickname “Wolf.” Another member of the team described him as “a very good shot.”

The NRA declined to comment on the donation. In 2015, the NRA Foundation gave $2.2 million in similar grants promoting gun use to schools around the country. This includes grants “to elementary and middle schools.”

The NRA Foundation’s website says it’s “investing in the next generation of America’s leaders” by devoting “a significant majority” of the group’s grants to “youth shooting sports.”

Thanks for including those extra paragraphs, as I was capped at four on an OP.

Yep. They've got to indoctrinate their little nazi bundists at an early age to make it as effective as a religion.

See for yourself on NRA youth website.

"YOUTH INTERESTS

The NRA has been actively involved in promoting the shooting sports to youth since 1903. We wish to ensure the future of the shooting sports by providing proper tools and resources to America's young people. There are a wide variety of youth programs including competitions, awards and contests, training and safety courses, scholarships, and more. Help instill firearm safety and introduce shooting sports to the next generation of gun owners.".

I would be absolutely fine, thrilled even, if the NRA did something so by the end of first grade there was education about how to handle coming across a gun and why they should immediately stop what they're doing, don't let anyone touch it, get everyone away from the gun, and get a grownup to deal with the situation. That even if they play video games with them, that the real thing is very different.

But I'm afraid that my prayer there is just about as useless as the "thoughts and prayers" being offered instead of action.

however I shot on my schools rifle team a hundred or so years ago. I never shot anyone nor even thought about it. NRA has in some way supported school rifle teams since before I was a competitive shooter. There is a hell of a lot of difference between a 22 target rifle and an AR 15. I don't believe the rifle team competes with AR 15s. I think this is a stretch that could hurt us in the long term.

10 STEPS TO JOINING THE MILITARY

"Enlisted Options: National Guard Enlisted "

Split-Option Enlistment

A second and very popular option for high school juniors is the Split Option Enlistment. As a junior in high school, you can enlist in the Army National Guard and not interrupt your high school education. You start by attending basic training the summer after your junior year. You will return home in time for school to begin your senior year in the fall. When you return, you will train one weekend per month with your local Army National Guard unit. The summer following your high school graduation, you will attend advanced individual training in the specialty you chose when you enlisted. In most cases, you will return in time to start college in the fall. If you are at least 17 years old, you can take advantage of the split option enlistment program.
