The marksmanship team was part of the schools JROTC program. On the team, Cruz trained with air rifles special-made for target shooting, typically on indoor ranges at targets the size of a coin.
Cruz discussed his AR-15 with other team members and was given the nickname Wolf. Another member of the team described him as a very good shot.

Yep. They've got to indoctrinate their little nazi bundists at an early age to make it as effective as a religion.

"YOUTH INTERESTS
The NRA has been actively involved in promoting the shooting sports to youth since 1903. We wish to ensure the future of the shooting sports by providing proper tools and resources to America's young people. There are a wide variety of youth programs including competitions, awards and contests, training and safety courses, scholarships, and more. (8,311 posts)I would be absolutely fine, thrilled even, if the NRA did something so by the end of first grade there was education about how to handle coming across a gun and why they should immediately stop what they're doing, don't let anyone touch it, get everyone away from the gun, and get a grownup to deal with the situation. That even if they play video games with them, that the real thing is very different.
But I'm afraid that my prayer there is just about as useless as the "thoughts and prayers" being offered instead of action.

(7,512 posts)however I shot on my schools rifle team a hundred or so years ago. I never shot anyone nor even thought about it. NRA has in some way supported school rifle teams since before I was a competitive shooter. There is a hell of a lot of difference between a 22 target rifle and an AR 15. I don't believe the rifle team competes with AR 15s. I think this is a stretch that could hurt us in the long term.

10 STEPS TO JOINING THE MILITARY
"Enlisted Options: National Guard Enlisted "
Split-Option Enlistment
A second and very popular option for high school juniors is the Split Option Enlistment. As a junior in high school, you can enlist in the Army National Guard and not interrupt your high school education. You start by attending basic training the summer after your junior year. You will return home in time for school to begin your senior year in the fall. When you return, you will train one weekend per month with your local Army National Guard unit. The summer following your high school graduation, you will attend advanced individual training in the specialty you chose when you enlisted. In most cases, you will return in time to start college in the fall. If you are at least 17 years old, you can take advantage of the split option enlistment program.
