Conservative advocacy groups have renewed calls for President Donald Trump to pardon those implicated in special counsel Robert Muellers investigation, citing allegations of partisan sabotage.
The push comes as the Mueller inquiry notches important victories. A grand jury in Washington, D.C., issued sweeping indictments against 13 Russian nationals for interference operations on Friday. The Los Angeles Times reported just two days later that former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates has agreed to cooperate with the special counsel.
Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, a government oversight group, said the president should seriously consider clemency for his associates given the alleged anti-Trump bias of Justice Department investigators. Several lawyers who joined Muellers team have donated to Democratic candidates, while FBI agents assessing Russian sabotage efforts regularly traded texts attacking Trumps candidacy.
The whole super structure of the Russia investigation is compromised, Fitton told Politico. Those caught up in it deserve some protection. Rather than just let the virus run its course, itd be appropriate for the president to consider pardons for people who are caught up in the prosecution.

(52,328 posts)we don't want a government that abuses the power to charge people with crimes -- any crime -- without the final failsafe of a presidential pardon.
the problem here comes in when the president himself is implicated in the criminal charges.
that's where impeachment comes in (and possibly criminal charges against the impeached and removed president), at least in theory.

(4,066 posts)They would be raising the roof and insisting on impeachment if Hillary was being investigated and the same suggestion was made be left-leaning groups.

(51,015 posts)none of this splatter hits him.
He can no longer claim that "Rusher" hijacking the election is fake news. He has HAD to acknowledge that it is a fact. And he has acknowledged it so completely that he's blaming other people for it. So now he can't back down from that acknowledgment.
So now, all he has left is to hope Mueller gets a lot of other people and it stops short of him. If he pardons those people, he makes it more likely that the finger will point to him, so he knows he can't do that. Basically, in his twisted mind, he needs to let the other people, up to and including his daughter and son-in-law, take the fall so he doesn't have to.
