Indiana State Teacher's Association Statement on Arming Teachers

ISTA President Teresa Meredith released this statement following remarks from President Trump on arming teachers:

“Arming educators sends a signal that we are giving up and accepting this crisis as the new reality. Instead of arming educators with guns, lawmakers should start by arming our schools with more psychologists and counselors so kids dealing with trauma get care before they become broken. Educators need to be focused on teaching our students. Together – parents, educators, lawmakers, community leaders – need to come up with real solutions that really will save lives.”

4. Sadly, they are buying right into the NRA fantasy that assault-weapon-caused massacres

can be stopped by psychological counseling, like that will catch everyone. They also need to include banning assault weapons.

5. I think that they are addressing what they immediately need in schools, rather than guns

It is not their job to legislate, it is their job to tell legislators what is and is appropriate on school grounds, because that is what legislators are talking about doing.

They are clarifying and correcting legislators.

Together – parents, educators, lawmakers, community leaders – need to come up with real solutions that really will save lives.

Seriously?

What part of this makes you think that?

Together – parents, educators, lawmakers, community leaders – need to come up with real solutions that really will save lives.

10. I'm saying there is nothing revolutionary or even controversial about their statement,

And that by putting the onus on counseling (to not commit mass murder), instead of on preventing people (who may need counseling to not commit mass murder) from being able to get instruments of mass murder in the first place, this statement gets the NRA's "guns at any cost" demand off the hook. It's a tacit acceptance that no effort will be made to remove assault weapons from the equation. That's why I think it's unimpressive.

11. So if it's not revolutionary, it's "cover for the NRA?" And a "tacit acceptance that no effort

will be made?"

Really?

It's an awful idea and IMHO normalizes the situation instead of actually coming up with actual solutions.

Just put out a statement that they consider arming teachers an unacceptable solution.

And it is. It's fucking insane.
