And he didnt keep talking about the WikiLeaks emails stolen by Russia because he thought voters didnt care.Defendants and their co-conspirators began to encourage U.S. minority groups not to vote in the 2016 U.S. presidential election or to vote for a third-party U.S. presidential candidate, according to a Feb. 16 grand jury indictment obtained by Mueller.
In fact, the day before Obama visited Jacksonville, Florida, to support Clinton, Russians purchased an ad for the Instagram account of a fake group called Blacktivist. It urged African-Americans to vote for a third-party candidate. Choose peace and vote for Jill Stein. Trust me, its not a wasted vote, the ad read, according to Muellers indictment.
It is impossible to know precisely how many voters nationally stayed home or voted for a third-party candidate because of the Russians social media campaign. Nevertheless, the details from the indictment raise new questions about the legitimacy of Trumps victory.

(5,943 posts)From my lay perspective, I don't suppose it would be criminal for the Trump campaign to have benefited from Russian attempts to sway U.S. voters. But if the Trump campaign said to them, "Hey, that's great! If you can do that for us, we'll return the favor and lift those sanctions", then that's a crime.
I'm no legal scholar, but many on DU are. Perhaps they can weigh in and let me know if I have it right.

(52,286 posts)Bribery is certainly one possible crime, but solicitation of espionage, receiving stolen goods, conspiracy, accepting foreign campaign contributions, and failing to report campaign contributions are all possible charges.
No doubt there are others Im not aware of.
Most of these do not require a quid pro quo.
