Freeperville has no answers to school shootings where cops/w/gunz fail (safe: no names or links)

Student Reveals Broward Sheriff Resource Officer Hid Behind Staircase, Pointed Gun At “Nothing”

Senior Brandon Huff rushed to the building where the shooting was taking place when he found out his girlfriend was inside.

She texted me, ‘There is a shooter in the room. I love you,’ so I freaked out. I dropped everything in my hands,” Huff said. […]

“The school resource officer was behind a stairwell wall, just standing there, and he had his gun drawn, and he was just pointing it at the building,” Huff said. “Shots started going off inside, and you could hear them going off over and over again.” […]

“He was pointing his gun at nothing. He was pointing his gun just at the building with kids in it, and he was just talking on the radio, and he never did anything for four minutes,” Huff said. […]

“He’s the only one with a gun,” Huff said. “He’s wearing a bullet proof vest, he has all that while school security guards, coaches were running in shielding kids — Coach Feis, Hixon were running in, shielding kids from bullets and losing their lives while he did nothing.”

When Coral Springs police officers arrived at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14 in the midst of the school shooting crisis, many officers were surprised to find not only that Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson, the armed school resource officer, had not entered the building, but that three other Broward County Sheriff’s deputies were also outside the school and had not entered, Coral Springs sources tell CNN. The deputies had their pistols drawn and were behind their vehicles, the sources said, and not one of them had gone into the school.

To be fair, you shouldn’t be pointing your gun unless you have a target.

How do we know the geography teacher with the .38 and no vest would do it better?

Some people freeze. Training is supposed to overcome that tendency -- a buddy who was in the army said they constantly has to slap Iraqi soldiers into action when the bullets started flying. Either way, by the time this is over I imagine this guy will wish he had run in there and been shot rather than face the shame he'll carry for the rest of his life.

This story is enraging on many levels. Was this school resource officer dude basically useless in a crisis situation? Was he a real cop or a “mall cop” security guard type dude? What about the deputies? They just arrive and hang out outside?I sure hope there is more to the story, which hopefully comes out. Because from what we’ve heard, it sounds like a massive failure on the part of police which contributed largely to this massacre.

... and why should we expect a “school resource officer” to fight like a battle-hardened Ranger?

Normal democrat behavior.

He went Full Fredo....

Broward county.....nuff said

Makes you wonder how many more of them are out there while they write you a ticket.

He was a full Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy who was assigned to that school. Clearly chickens#it is the expectation of the Broward sheriff, who leads by example.

I don’t expect him to fight like a Ranger, I expect him to do the job he’s paid for and confront the threat that he is armed specifically to confront.

What the ****** hell? You people are EXCUSING this coward’s behavior? You crouch behind a stairwell and do NOTHING while some freak kills unarmed children inside the building? WHAT THE ****** HELL?

Those cowards should be shamed for the rest of their lives.

What an effing coward.

If I had a gun and a vest I’d have died trying.

How long will it be before the deputies start talking about being ordered to stand down? They can use the “I was just following orders” defense. I wonder if there are recordings of the radio chatter.

It’s mind numbing. Makes you start to think about how to solve the situation for different results, e.g., home school, but how to overcome those people whose incomes would need a different setup.

“... and why should we expect a “school resource officer” to fight like a battle-hardened Ranger?”

Then why does he have a gun?

A geography teacher would at least understand the principle of angles and pointing.

I guarantee you if I was there with my 45 and NO vest I would have engaged that son of a Bitch! You don’t have to stand out in the open to do it!

To scare misbehaving kids

CNN talking point.

"How do we know the geography teacher with the .38 and no vest would do it better?"Well, the geography teacher couldn't have done any worse than the SRO or the three cowards hiding outside behind their car.

The arriving officers from Coral Gables (?) were shocked at their behavior and entered the building to defend/lend aid to the unarmed students as best they could . Because he was a sheriff’s deputy. No one expected him to fight like a “battled hardened ranger”. We just don’t expect him to do nothing.

That’s a very good question. There definitely would be recordings, but with today’s often encrypted police radios there may not be any outside of the Sheriff’s control. It would be very interesting to know how many “play by play” reports were filed by the cowardly deputy and his pals, and what if any instructions they were given by their superiors. You’d think with an active shooter situation the protocol would have been to get a senior officer on the radio right away.

The odd thing is that Peterson has already resigned, which would seem less likely if he had been ordered to hold back.

I think you mean geometry teacher, but I get your point.

He didn’t do nothing, he secured the perimeter

Because he was a Sheriff deputy. Fully trained. This was not a rent a cop. This was supposedly a trained person. I bet he was hell on wheels about hunting parents down and harassing them if they dared to pull their kids and put them in another school.(Bitter personal experience)

We don’t know if the geography teacher with the .38 and no vest would have done better. But he would have tried. Not stood at the door like Scott Peterson waiting for three other Browder County deputies to bring donuts and coffee.

How do we know the geography teacher with the .38 and no vest would do it better?
The geography teacher certainly couldn't have done it any worse.

Should the teacher be kept from protecting students because he/she might not do a better job than the cop cowering outside? At a minimum, the teacher would be motivated by self-protection rather than pension-protection.

How do we know the geography teacher with the .38 and no vest would do it better? The point is, will the shooter even take the chance if he knows that teachers are armed? Your leftist view has been noted however.

Yea the perimeter was him. “I be perimeter.” Good job coward of the county. Oh wait a minute the sheriff has that title, “Coward of the County”

Exactly. Not an "action" job, not homicide, not SWAT, not gangs, not drugs, not even traffic where you might have to fight for yourself occasionally. If he even felt any sort of emotion for the kids he governed served, he might have gone in... but oh well.

An actual deputy should have been all that’s necessary to go after a 21 non-hardened/trained anything nut case.

Clearly this guys primary function in local law enforcement was to collect a paycheck.

From all the reports I have read Broward county deputies disgraced themselves with total cowardly behavior. BCSD is a department of substantial size and resources yet a smaller community police department, Coral Springs makes immediate entry upon arrival.

BCSD is in full CYA mode.

How do we know the geography teacher with the .38 and no vest would do it better? How could he do worse?

The Coward of Broward was perfectly safe cowering well away from the shooter.

A geography teacher in the building being shot at could scarcely show less resolve. Even if she froze (and a she-bear protecting cubs is unlikely to fold) the history teacher, the math teacher, the art teacher, and the ESL teachers are unlikely to ALL freeze!

The last failure in a long list.Only 8 months until Election Day.The communists in the press and DC are going to make sure they win back the House and impeach Trump. That is their main goal.

Trump governs like a man scared of impeachment.Thought he was going to take out the trash. He is trying to play by the rules. That’s a recipe for disaster.

... and why should we expect a “school resource officer” to fight like a battle-hardened Ranger?Because he was a sworn deputy, with 20+ years of law enforcement experience. The sheriff should resign for starters.

Potential shooters need to know that the possibility of opposition exists - from multiple possible sources. That alone will stop many of these attacks.

If you haven’t got the guts to use a weapon to protect helpless kids, you shouldn’t have one. Ever.

Went looking for recordings of radio traffic (which does seem to exist but I haven’t found it yet) - and mostly found more excuses about how the radio system was overloaded and first responders weren’t able to communicate.

What a bunch of BS, after small towns and counties all over the country were forced to update to trunked digital radio systems after 9-11 to solve this exact problem! What’s the Broward Sheriff’s excuse for that?

Cops didn’t know the video was delayed by 20 minutes. They must all be incompetent, from the Sheriff on down. Fire him and then clean house and put someone in who can train LEOs to do their jobs.

The Coward of Coward County.

Well you fool that has not been proposed. Take your trolling somewhere else

It would not take a battle hardened ranger to ease in the door of that school with a 12 gauge shotgun and carefully move up to a point where he could get a shot at that kid. Like when he was reloading. You don’t come back from a load of 00 buck shot.

That would be a geometry teacher. Close enough.

We conservatives in many cases have actually helped Trump, we have actually made in harder - Alabama! And please no excuses about the lack of support from McConnell, the MSM war on him and the “accusers”. All GOP’ers had to do was turn out an vote! Keeping that seat was more important then the flaws of Moore (Which apparently were considerable given the end result!) or of Strange (again his flaws unimportant compared to keeping the seat!)

You are a shame to Georgia

Patton would bit-h slap some deputies.

How do we know the geography teacher with the .38 and no vest would do it better? The same way I know that my chances of survival are better with a 5 shot pistol or even a two shot derringer when ‘approached’ by 6 ‘teenagers’ with mayhem in their mind.
Chances are pretty good they will scramble when first seeing your weapon which allows you to leave the area.
My 5 shot pistol is a damn site better than a cell phone and cops 3 blocks away or a TShirt with a ‘no guns symbol’.
Maybe they may even see the sign and back off...

If a shooter is right outside your classroom would you rather have a chance or no chance?

The teacher couldn’t do worse even if he was only trying to protect himself.I do think teachers develop a bond with their students though and would try to protect them.

Here's the sheriff instructing Officer Peterson on department policy on how to "protect" students.

The SRO is not just on assignment at the school you know. They do the same type of jobs the other officers do when school is not in session.

And you don't get to be a SRO without some years on the job.Nice attempt to save him but sorry. You missed.

He retired before it became known there were other deputies who waited outside. He is probably better off slinking away with his pension intact than trying to defend his actions from Sheriff Israel who tried to scapegoat him.
Are the others eligible for retirement benefits? Is Sheriff Israel going to hang them out to dry, too?

why should we expect a “school resource officer” to fight like a battle-hardened Ranger?
Because the 32 year law enforcement officer who trains every month does not need to be a combat hardened Ranger. There were no artillery, no rockets, no armies, no land mines and there was only 1 teenage enemy opponent who clearly had little or no training. In fact, if the SRO had been doing their job, the teenage suspect, who'd been thrown out of the same school, would have never made it onto the school campus in the first place.

Apparently an entire platoon of unknown mental cases, who didn't attend the school, could have willy nillie walk into campus, right past the cop and shot everyone on campus.

We SHOULD expect him to do the job he is being paid for....

Anyone who at least tried would have done better, and no I don't know what I would have done, but I'm not the one that decided to become a law enforcement officer, I'm not the one that said he would protect the children when he took the assignment at the school.I would guess that he thought it was a plum do nothing assignment he could play at until he retired, now he is facing ridicule, at the least, from almost everyone that recognizes him and I can't imagine how he can live with himself afterwards. I honestly believe that if it was me, suicide would be in my very near future. No attempt to save him— I just don’t think “school resource officers” are the solution to school shootings.

Certainly the shooter didn’t think they were, either. Armed teachers and coaches, and even armed students, would do a better job defending kids than a “school resource officer”.

Because normally these type events don’t turn into long gun battles like you see on TV shows. If the youngster would have had any rounds coming his way the outcome could have been better than the way it turned out.

"Potential shooters need to know that the possibility of opposition exists - from multiple possible sources. That alone will stop many of these attacks."Yes, the first and best purpose of a screened and trained group of volunteers within the school is deterrence: the shooters who are mostly cowards to begin with will think twice about entering a school with an unknown number of armed opponents.

I don't know about these big city geography teachers, but where I'm from a couple teachers in the Army Reserve have had deployments to the middle east and served their country. They would have done better in this crisis than the cowards out in the parking lot waiting for the perp to run out of bullets.

Now there we agree.I have always felt the SRO's to be pretty much worthless as far as security goes.

Teachers who are armed are a much better solution.

Why did he have bullets in his gun if it was to be used only to scare kids?

In the Parkland case, their security system had a dismal record concerning student safety and security that should be brought to public discussion particularly beginning with this school having a so called “gun free zone”. It did have an officer who may be armed assigned to patrol the multi acre site in a golf cart, but bans guns from the rest of its internal security Criticism arose when the officer assigned to this duty who was nearing retirement He was reported to arrive late and after Cruz had entered the building but stationed himself outside the large structure and had called for support. Two officers responded Which and did the same. He then left before Cruz did. Those laissez faire attitudes strongly suggest examining records of reporting how the bureaucracy at this school handled student vs student, and student vs teacher (Cruz was accused of this) altercations, vandalism, thefts, and drug use. Which are bound to occur were being dealt with.To which a dramatic reduction in disciplinary incidents were reported after a visit by Obama occurred.
Because of these Ding Bat liberal policies it brings up another question. Just how safe and secure are those kids ? There’s a lot of krap that happens; Assaults, fights, thefts, books and items stolen, teachers accosted, kids intimidated....
Examine records reporting how student vs student, and student vs teacher altercations, vandalism, and thefts, which are bound to occur were being dealt with.
Because in an educational unit this size it’s pretty clear their security system failed . In a secure system Cruz would have never gotten inside.
Now that school board has decided to tear down the school which was probably raised by a funding referendums and the grounds house a memorial.

Or, alternatively, you make the school defended and put a squad of officers or even a pair.

Together they would be more likely to psych themselves up against a psycho with a rifle.

Because idiots run this country and force out people with any sense.

Some cops carry weapons to protect themselves.

The dust is beginning to settle on this tragedy giving us a much clearer picture on the causes. Wholesale government failure on many levels yet the left wants the people to cede the government even more power by taking away our unalienable rights. The founders made it difficult for us to enact kaws for a reason.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.

After reading the entire thread, while I appreciate your heartfelt concern for the loss of life, your all talking thru your butt. You have no idea what your talking about. First the shooter had a body vest on, second he was shooting with a RIFLE, never mind the brand, infinitely more accurate than a hand gun, by a factor of 10. The officer had a 9mm side arm, with effective range accurately of 10 yards or 30 feet. Just getting into range to fire with students scrambling and firing out of range could injure otherwise safe students as he was in classrooms on 2 of the 3 floors, and going up and down stairwells. So finding the shooter, getting to him, and finding cover while getting there would be difficult. If you have ever walked the halls of a 3 story school, you know the halls are very open with little cover. Now add that this guy is overweight, 54 years old and going against a teenager with good knees and hips with body armor, and you have no cover or back-up, with the wrong weapon, its a recipe for suicide.
A teacher with a .38 stands the same chance, and I notice nobody went in a fired a shot. So woulda, coulda, shoulda, is only for arm chair quarterbacks who shoot off their mouths but never have to put up or shut up. When his fellow broward sheriffs showed up, they also stayed outside, behind police cruisers...ever wonder why? Coral Gable officers went in and freed students in hiding 30 minutes after the shooting started. Condemn one, condemn all, but to say you know what you would have done is merely bravado, you were not there, you did not do anything, but unlike him, he, while behind cover, communicated with the sheriffs office, and gave what information he could, at close range, he could have taken out the shooter if he came out the west side of the school, in fact he exited from the 3rd floor down the east stairs and out of the school after dumping his vest and weapon on the third floor. Notice, no other police officer stopped him as he exited school grounds. Just sayin...

If your intention was to be defined by your words and draw attention to yourself......well done. /s

Together they would be more likely to psych themselves up against a psycho with a rifle.Well, four of them were not able to do it.

And whole squads have stayed out "evaluating the situation" at other school shootings.I would say more officers is not the answer.

Anybody on earth would have done better. That frikken coward shouldn’t be allowed human company after his failure.
We have way too many swaggering oafs who haven’t any right at all to call themselves men. Men fight for their families, their community, and their country.

Kenny Rogers could have a new hit song:“The Cowards of Broward County”I just don’t think “school resource officers” are the solution to school shootings. Peterson was seasoned trained law enforcement officer with 32 years experience. Learn it.

and shot several kids instead of the perp. And they could have gotten themselves killed while not hitting the perp. And against an AR-15 a teacher with a handgun would likely have lost that confrontation.

Long school hallways where there is no cover, and the automatic can fire the entire length, sweeping across at rapid fire speed.

Sure. One pistol where they have to hit him in the head on the first try. Yup. That's what teachers are expected to do. Of course.

that at Columbine one of the shooters (Harris, I believe) was confronted by an armed LEO who caught him while he was trying to reload, getting off 4 shots with his pistol. While the LEO believed one of the shots had hit Harris he was incorrect. Harris finished reloading and kept on killing.
