They had to go through the Soviets to get to the gold medal round. The anniversary of the "Miracle on Ice" was Thursday.

The set-up was different back then. They went by points, not by elimination, as is done currently. They had to beat Finland to win the gold medal.

Was round robin, not elimination. The win over ussr guaranteed the us would medal but need to defeat Finland for the gold, the would have meant silver and a loss would have left them with bronze

I remember watching that game in the lounge of my dorm, with a bunch of other people from my floor.

I'm watching a different sort of "miracle" at the moment...the men's curling match. Well, the re-run, as the actual match was on during the wee hours of the morning here. Not the same as that hockey match, but it's always fun to see the underdogs win. On that note, GO GERMANY!!!

The game against the Soviets was not televised live, I listened to it on the radio earlier. If I had been old enough to go to bars I could have made a fortune betting on the finish of the game

I plan to watch the curling match after I get done working today. It sounds like it was rather incredible

I didn't hear the game, but that was something that couldn't be kept secret. I was stunned when I heard the score on the radio.
