Maplewood police said no one was hurt after a third-grader reached into a school liaison officer's holster and fired the gun on Monday.
The incident happened in the school gym at Harmony Learning Center in Maplewood, where the officer was "interacting with (third- and fourth-graders) and building relationships," according to a police department release.
The release says the officer was sitting on a bench, and a third-grader "reached over and placed his finger into the officer's gun holster and pressed the trigger of the officer's gun causing it to discharge though the bottom of the holster."
The round hit the floor, and no one was injured, the press release states.

Now tell me again, what could possibly go wrong with even more guns in schools?

(17,863 posts)Or a weapon with a safety on it?
Teachers are in close contact all the time with the students (in particular music teachers but also coaches, drama teachers). Grade school teachers are down at the level of the students many times.

(19,246 posts)No one expects an officer to rack the slide after they draw their firearm when seconds count.
And as for safeties, a lot of handguns no longer use traditional safeties; they have a "trigger safety" that basically just makes the trigger pull longer and a little heavier. Glocks, for example, use this. You can see the lever in the trigger here.

(19,246 posts)That used good old manual safeties.
I still shudder when I see a Glock "safety".

(6,843 posts)And the trigger. All officers' guns should have that at a minimum.

(22,976 posts)And this wasn't some doofus metal-shop teacher with a flattop haircut. This was a (one would reasonably assume) law-enforcement officer who (again, one would reasonably assume) had proper training with firearms and the situational awareness that comes with the responsibility of his job.

(43,049 posts)They talk about the holster, but not why a loaded gun with the safety off was in that holster.
Even better, look where it happened:
