Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg calls for spring break boycott of Florida

One of the Parkland school shooting survivors is calling on tourists to boycott the State of Florida for spring break as a way to get legislators’ attention focused on gun control.

“Let's make a deal DO NOT come to Florida for spring break unless gun legislation is passed,” David Hogg, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student who is a leader in the #neveragain movement, posted on Twitter on Saturday.

Hogg said he hoped his tweet would make state politicians listen if the “billion-dollar tourism industry in Florida” makes gun control measures a priority.

“If the legislators aren’t going to listen to us, like they didn’t listen to us in Tallahassee the other day, maybe they’ll listen to the tourism industry,” Hogg told the South Florida Sun Sentinel in a phone interview.

Every Democrat in the state house voted to take up gun legislation. Why punish them and their constituents?

13. Could apply that logic to other issues. Why boycott ALL of N. Carolina over the "bathroom bill"?

It punished people/businesses that supported repeal of the bill... such "collateral damage" is a necessary outcome for maximum effect.

...it’s likely you booked your vacation months ago. I’m not planning to cancel my cruise out of Port Canaveral.

8. The problem with that is that it hurts local businesses

More than the politicians. And most of republican Florida is in the middle and upper part of the state, not where the tourists go.

10. +1 He would have been better off encouraging people to spring break in South Florida

And to choose that area over Panama City Beach (another popular spring break destination in Florida). The former is heavily Democratic, while Panama City Beach is heavily republican.

can persuade Marco Rubio et al to give up their ill begotten yachts and water front homes.

Fat chance.

I prefer it when banks and corporations pull their support from the NRA monster.

The whole idea is for complacent adults to share the pain. These kids know exactly what they're doing.

The true issue in Florida are the fat cats who move there to avoid income taxes but vote in favor of more guns.

Plus, boycotting an entire state is really overly broad. The car rental and airline companies are already distancing themselves from the NRA. I am sure that Disney isn't a huge fan.

So all the mom and pop places hoping for a financial recovery in the wake of devastating hurricanes are to suffer again? Because the parts of the state that don’t rely on tourists as much are holding up doing what you want. A lot of people are counting on a good spring break to help payback loans they took to rebuild.
