Anti-abortion Democrat snubbed by party for reelection

The party's campaign arm has declined to endorse Rep. Dan Lipinski, one of the most conservative Democrats, who faces a challenge from the left.

By HEATHER CAYGLE 02/25/2018 06:56 AM EST

Dan Lipinski is the kind of candidate Democrats need more of for the party to win the House in November. But the national Democratic party is refusing to endorse him.

The seven-term congressman from Chicago, who opposes abortion and voted against Obamacare, marriage equality and immigration reform, is one of the most conservative members of the House Democratic Caucus.

The question of whether the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will officially back Lipinski for reelection — he faces a stiff primary challenge from the left — has triggered an outbreak of ill will and finger-pointing from each wing of the party toward the other. With less than a month until the March 20 primary, tensions that have been brewing privately for weeks between the caucus’ centrist and progressive lawmakers are now spilling out into a messy public spat.

Caught in the middle are House Democratic leaders, who govern a caucus more aligned with Lipinski’s opponent, Marie Newman. But they are wary of appearing to kick one of their incumbents to the curb, aware of the potential long-term implications for party that is struggling to regain its standing with blue-collar voters.

One his dad was Congressman from that district for many years. Two the opposition to him in previous primaries was split allowing him to win with less than 50% of the vote in primaries. The Chicago machine even ran candidates to have that happen. Finally, he has been supported by unions over the years.

Anti-choice, anti-equality, anti-healthcare. Does he support any Democratic positions?

BULLSHIT!!!!
Who is this HEATHER CAYGLE?? Must be some right wing retard on Politico.

Lipinski is THE WORST kind of Democrat in congress. We need to get rid of his ilk in order to save the country. You wait, if he gets defeated in the primary he will pull a Lieberman.

We're flipping seats all across the country by being MORE PROGRESSIVE. Not by being RePUKES in disguise like Lipinski. Go ahead, Dan. Switch parties. See how far that gets ya..

Commentary by morans like Caygle make me wanna puke. All that "center-right" nonsense...

...we don't pay attention to down ballot candidates. Lipinski was able to stay under the radar because he was basically left ignored. Now there is a challenge.

5...4...3..2.. til he makes his announcement after his primary defeat and runs as an independent, "I didn't leave my party. My party left me."
