Brad Ashford and Kara Eastman say they would push for gun restrictions (US Congress)

By Roseann Moring first in the World-Herald

The two Democratic candidates for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District both say they would be aggressive advocates for gun control measures such as an assault weapons ban and universal background checks.

Candidates Brad Ashford and Kara Eastman agree on the issues: They both want to beef up the process for background checking those who would purchase a firearm, implement a mandatory waiting period before the purchase of a firearm and ban the sale of some types of military-style weapons. Both oppose President Donald Trump’s proposal to equip teachers with firearms.

But their styles and experiences differ, and both say they’re better equipped to tap into the latest wave of anti-gun sentiment that has been spreading to schools across the country after a shooting left 17 people dead at a Florida high school. In the Omaha area, students at several schools have staged walkouts to advocate for more restrictions on weapons.

Ashford, a former congressman and state senator, pointed to his decades-long record of pushing for gun restrictions — including sponsoring Nebraska’s gun permit law.
