Political Blackmail... Georgia Republicans threaten to stop Delta tax break over NRA decision

Delta's decision to cut ties with the NRA could cost it a generous tax break from the state of Georgia.

The state's Republicans — including a major candidate for governor— are threatening to kill part of a bill that would eliminate a state tax on jet fuel. If it passes, the provision is expected to save the Atlanta-based airline tens of millions of dollars.

"We felt that it was wrong for them to single out one company," said Chuck Hufstetler, chairman of the state's Senate Finance Committee. Delta (DAL) on Saturday announced that it would end discounted rates for National Rifle Association members.

Hufstetler told CNN on Monday that if the airline does not reverse its stance on the NRA soon, he and others will push for the tax break to be stripped from the bill. The bill still needs to pass the Senate before it can be signed into law.

although I'm not sure who to root for here.

Do I want the airline to lose a lucrative tax break they probably don't deserve?

Or, do I want them to support the NRA?

Decisions, decisions.

. . .this could be (could) a benefit to the consumer. SWA lowered prices when they bought that refinery near the Philly airport because they now controlled their own source of fuel. They dropped and ticket prices dropped.

Not saying Delta will do this, but it is possible and there is precedent.

They realistically can’t relocate from Atlanta, but some of the top-paying jobs - the people who run the computers that run the company - can be located anywhere.

Delta has probably already told the people who run the State that they will lose a lot of investment and jobs if they don’t play nice.

Of course the ticket people and all of the mechanics and others working on the planes will remain in Atlanta.
But the big jobs in the economy going forward are the people behind the scenes in data processing and management. They can be located anywhere.
National Car Rental has offices at every major airport. But all of their customer service (low paying jobs) and data processing (good paying job) are located in a rural SC town. There is a lot Delta can threaten to do to deprive GA of jobs and investment.

That being said, I have been around state politics too long to think that what you read is the real story. I don't doubt the GA AG told the Delta lobbyist ahead of time what he was going to say to please his constituents and that nothing would come of it.

is available. Delta shut it down after acquiring Northwestern. But, it's still there, and Minnesota would be happy to be the location of the headquarters of Delta. Yes, indeed we would.
