Democrats marshal strike force to counter Trump on national security in 2018, 2020 elections

Democrats marshal strike force to counter Trump on national security in 2018, 2020 elections
By Anne Gearan February 27 at 1:22 PM

Voters were undeterred by the 2016 cries of alarm from Democrats — and some Republicans — that Donald Trump was unqualified to be commander in chief, but a group of Democrats is betting Trump’s record in office will push national security issues to the fore in the 2018 midterms and the next presidential election.

A group of mostly young veterans of President Barack Obama’s administration and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign is launching a political strike force aimed at countering Trump and Republicans on national security.

“We decided, essentially, this is an emergency moment and that there was a need to pull together the national security community on the progressive side to counter Trump’s policies and put forward an alternative” in this midterm year, said Ben Rhodes, one of the founders.

The group, National Security Action, is more expressly political than many Democratic-leaning think tanks and policy shops, but it will not endorse candidates or make political donations, Rhodes and others said.

from his administration a year ago to monitor and fight crimes committed against our institutions from within the administration. "United to Protect Democracy." They've been very busy and have a website.

Last fall the National Student Legal Defense Network was similarly formed by former Democratic officials to fight Betsy DeVos specifically and for other education and civil rights issues.

Those are the ones I know about from the top of my head, but prior Democratic officials and appointees have mobilized to fight on a lot of battlegrounds.

Democrats are manning the walls of democracy against the barbarian hoards. The battles are mostly in courtrooms and the swords are legal principles and regression analyses, but those are the high ground they haven't been able to take.

policy and public narratives.

.....In the end, national security issues were far down the list of reasons that voters said moved them to pick Trump. The novice Republican politician had an ear for economic anxieties and concern over immigration that helped build a “security” narrative that was more direct and personal than the themes Clinton articulated.

Trump has kept that narrative going in office, and it has proved effective in keeping Trump’s political base on board, Sullivan said Tuesday.

Sullivan and Rhodes asserted, however, that there are many examples of Trump reneging on the promises he made to voters, including to disentangle the United States from Middle East wars. He has continued or expanded the fights in Iraq and Syria without a clear mission, Rhodes said.

Jen Psaki, a senior Obama adviser who also served as State Department spokeswoman, said Trump’s governing record “is worse than we thought” and provides Democrats ammunition they didn’t have in 2016.

“Now, 15 months later, there’s a record to look at,” Psaki said. “It’s now played itself out, and the warnings have come true and then some.”

Typically, national security issues are less important voting motivators for Democrats than for Republicans, except in times of unpopular wars. Nonetheless, the new group plans to try to amplify a Democratic message that Trump is erratic and untrustworthy in foreign policy.

gathering to fight as "National Security Action." Actually, Obama has been working quietly with some of them from the beginning. They're all experienced and know how to get things done in DC.

Politico: Obama alums form group to target 'reckless' Trump foreign policy

Former Obama administration officials unveiled a new advocacy group Tuesday aimed at pushing back on President Donald Trump's foreign policy initiatives.

The push is led by former deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes and former White House deputy assistant Jake Sullivan, who both served under President Barack Obama. Rhodes and Sullivan, who also worked as senior policy adviser to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016, will co-chair the new National Security Action organization. ...

Touting participation from more than 50 national security experts, the group aims to provide resources for its allies in Congress and mobilize grass-roots organizations against Trump's "dangerous" foreign policy.

“We’re committed to organizing an effective, strategic, relentless, and national response to this administration’s dangerous approach to national security," Sullivan said in a news release. "This is not a new think tank or policy shop. Our role is to help shape the public debate on foreign policy and national security, holding Trump accountable and lifting up an alternative, affirmative vision." ...

"Not long ago, the United States was the undisputed leader of the free world," the organization said in a news release. "National Security Action will support and drive efforts to ensure America is once again."

President Trump is failing to protect the country. No president in the history of the country has done that. He has evidence of foreign meddling in our elections, and his national security advisors have urged him to do something about it. He's done nothing to protect the integrity of the 2018 election. It's dereliction of duty.

It doesn't have to be complicated; in fact, in the U.S., the simpler, the better. And fer crissakes, KEEP SAYING IT. Don't think that just because you said it once or twice that people will get it. Keep harping on it. You don't hear the Foxbots saying "crooked Hillary" because Trump once tweeted that. No, Trump tweeted it again and again until it was a staple of conservative commentary. We have to do the same thing about Trump's dereliction of duty and failure to protect the country.
