Prior to reading Fire & Fury, I wondered the same. After reading it though, I'm firmly convinced Trump and his staff really are actual idiots who, though good at commercial branding, are incompetent at just about everything an administration requires.

There are more than a few passages in the book describing Trump's complete surprise at the reaction by the nation to his removal of Comey as FBI Director. He actually believed it was as easy and as quick as firing the barista at one of his motels, and could not grasp the full range of consequences that would follow.

He's an idiot. Sure, he's a huckster and a snake-oil salesman as well, but first and foremost, he's an idiot.

he doesn't pay attention. All his life he has done exactly what he wanted to do. If he made a mess, he paid someone to clean it up or declared bankruptcy. He has never had to deal with consequences of his actions, therefor doesn't fully appreciate the mess he is in.

He has also never had to be sneaky to avoid getting caught. Which is why he has left a trail of evidence a mile wide' He honestly believes that he can toss all the blame on others and get away with it. As he has done his entire life. He will throw his kids under the bus, while denying any wrong.

Complete and total lack of empathy, coupled with the emotional maturity of an 8 year old.

And incredibly and mind-numbingly stupid.
