Shes in Immense Personal Jeopardy: Even for Hope Hicks, the West Wing Got Too Hot

Emotionally overwhelmed by the headlines over Rob Porter, manipulated by Kelly, and interviewed by Mueller and Congress, the presidents surrogate daughter is leaving the Trump bunker at one of his toughest moments.

................................................) Since the inauguration, nearly two dozen senior officials have quit or been pushed out. But even for a White House roiled by firings and resignations, the announcement that Hope Hicks was quitting was of a different magnitude, reaching into Trumps own bunker in a way no other event has to this point.
The 29-year-old Hicks serves as communications director, but her role and power in the West Wing and in the presidents daily life is vastly more significant than any formal title. Shes been a constant presence at Trumps side from the inception of his presidential run in 2015, serving as a gatekeeper and emotional support system for the temperamental chief executive. She defends Trump fiercely, and Trump returns the loyalty. Staffers remark that Trump treats HicksHope-y as he calls herlike a surrogate daughter. Her centrality was such that it was hard to imagine Trump functioning without her.
.........................
The tipping point for Hicks was more personal, sources said. She was emotionally overwhelmed by seeing herself in the headlines during her boyfriend Rob Porters domestic abuse scandal, one Hicks friend told me. Hicks expressed disbelief at the allegations that Porter beat his ex-wives. Shes recently told people shes no longer dating Porter.
Another factor in her exit was her deteriorating relationship with Chief of Staff John Kelly. Hes a wartime general and hes turned the West Wing into a war zone, the friend recalled Hicks complaining. Kelly blamed Hicks for orchestrating the White Houses defense of Porter, given her personal conflict in the story. .....................................................
Hickss decision to leave is the latest sign of how adept Kelly has been at reversing his own fortunes. Just weeks ago, the chief was on the ropes, his reputation for straight shooting in dire danger. It was revealed hed promoted Porter even after he knew about the domestic abuse; and it was Kelly who helped blow up immigration-reform talks by calling DACA recipients lazy. You know how Rahm Emanuel said, Never let a good crisis go to waste? Thats what Kelly did, a Republican close to the White House said. But at seemingly his lowest moment, Kelly pulled off a masterstroke by promulgating new security-clearance rules that neutralized his biggest West Wing rivals: Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. The Jivanka team is crumbling, a person close to the White House said. A day before Hicks resigned, Kushners spokesman Josh Raffel announced he, too, was quitting. Between the relentless chaos of the West Wing and the looming Mueller investigation, even the most committed staffers are re-evaluating their options..............................

(63,221 posts)I have no pity for her. Not only that, but she has famously bad judgement in just about everything. Her name and reputation are tarnished for life and she's only 29. She did this to herself.

(10,252 posts)If you make bad decisions, you can expect bad outcomes of suffering and unhappiness. Karma is just like gravity; it never stops working. The only redeeming virtue of bad karma is the possibility of using mistakes to learn and gain wisdom. But will she? No one twisted her arm to work for Trump. Leaving the WH might be the only smart thing that she has done in years. If she were really smart, she would contact Mueller, hand over her diary, and offer to help his investigation to the best of her ability.

(1,461 posts)She showed really poor judgement, so hard to have an immense amount of pity for her, you reap what you so. Her parents (her father has a high-end PR background) should have counselled her long ago to get the hell away from Trump, especially after he "won". Being a high level employee of his comes with a short half-life and is incredibly fraught with peril.

(12,344 posts)Also, I think it is no coincidence her parents came to Washington after the Porter thing blew up. I expect they are telling her to cut a deal with Mueller right now.
She is likely to get little or no jail time. Prosecutors are suckers for young, pretty idiots who have lots of good information.

I don't have much sympathy for her, but she had to have endured some of the worst working conditions known. Trump treated her like a whore and humiliated her every chance he got.

She is a woman that is entering the middle aged world.
Multitudes of women who aren't as pretty as she is have been made to suffer for stupid mistakes made at a much younger age...costing them future jobs and opportunities.
She went all-in on a losing hand.
She should pay for those consequences like anyone else who is not as pretty or connected as she is.

(12,448 posts)Kelly blaming her for the Porter disaster is the height of craven hypocrisy. HE was the one who loudly and publicly praised and defended Porter TWICE. Yes, Hicks was also to blame, but for Kelly to blame her and ignore his part just shows us again what an asshole he is.

Someday I suspect Ivanka will learn that lesson also - Daddy don't care for anyone but daddy.

I give Hope enough credit and respect to believe she was well aware of what was going on and believe she has the intelligence to know what her behavior and function in this cabal was contributing.
Unless she has been wearing a wire and flipped months ago I find her a particularly disgusting character in this saga.
