My mom gave me the choice at age 9 if I wanted to go to CCD anymore. I said, "Hell no, I want to sleep late on Sat mornings". My whole family is a group of non god fearing atheists and the only thing bad about that is the yummy communion wafers are missed. You can get a tub of them for about $7...a good deal.

(17,984 posts)There was this one guy who had his own tefillin, his own tzitzit, everything. I think he must have been raised orthodox. Anyway, this guy was in our little group who went the first evening and met up again the next evening after the fast. Our group decided to break the fast with pizza. Hurray! We went to the pizza place and started ordering. The guy who had been raised orthodox ordered his with bacon. Some snickered, but we ignored it until his pizza came. He lifted a piece and all the cheese fell off the slice onto his plate. I exclaimed, "That's definitely a sign!" He told me, "No, it would only be a sign if it had fallen in my lap, but since it landed on the plate who cares."

I was raised Catholic. Never believed in it, but I have plenty of "cafeteria Catholic" relatives. None of them care about what the fanatical grandstanding bishops say. They see right through the partisan hypocritical nonsense.

(7,434 posts)When the Catholic Church is just as dogmatic about outlawing the sales and use of guns and assault rifles, is just as dogmatic about demanding universal health care (including the health of pregnant women), they might gain credibility. There are many "pro-life" positions that the Church simply ignores because of political expediency.

(13,199 posts)Here is what Paprocki said regarding refusing communion for the Senator "I agree completely with His Eminence, Cardinal Timothy Dolan" well, that clears that up.
This is not new either:
"In April 2004, Sen. Durbins pastor, then Msgr. Kevin Vann (now Bishop Kevin Vann of Orange, CA), said that he would be reticent to give Sen. Durbin Holy Communion because his pro-abortion position put him outside of communion or unity with the Churchs teachings on life. My predecessor, now Archbishop George Lucas of Omaha, said that he would support that decision. I have continued that position."
Political organizations should be regulated and taxed.
Criminal organizations should be prosecuted.
The Roman Catholic Church in America is both. His Eminence Cardinal Dolan should be doing time for aiding and abetting a pedophile procuring conspiracy.
He should be forced to register as a right wing lobbyist as well...

(70,593 posts)CARDINAL BERNARD LAW, the disgraced former archbishop of Boston who failed to stop child molesters in the priesthood, has died "following a long illness," the Vatican announced Wednesday. He was 86.
After the sex abuse scandal broke in Boston, Law was forced to resign in 2002. The Catholic church moved him to serve as the archpriest of the Papal Liberian Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, one of the most important churches in the Catholic religion.
Law's inaction was revealed in The Boston Globe's Spotlight investigation into sexual abuse in the Catholic church. It was found Law and other bishops prior to him had covered for pedophile priests in the Boston Ardicocese, moving abusive priests from parish to parish, despite knowledge of their sexual abuse of young children without alerting police or parents.
Law apologized to victims of one priest, Rev. John Geoghan, a serial abuser. He insisted Geoghan's abuse was in the past, CNN reported. Law, one of the most powerful and influential figures in the Catholic church, never faced any criminal repercussions.

By making a public statement, Bishop Asshole has made it political, which could lead his diocese to lose it's tax exempt status. And he has violated the Seal of the Confessional and his vow as a priest, which is a sin, and he could be subject to excommunication.
