(California) State GOP drops voter ID initiative
California Republican Party officials are apparently backing off earlier comments that they intend to pursue a ballot initiative requiring voters to show an ID at the polls - and observers say that's a good thing, considering the GOP's dismal record with minorities in the Golden State.
GOP Chairman Tom Del Beccaro told the Mercury News this week about plans to undertake the controversial initiative.
But the troubled party - which is so deep in debt that leaders recently approved layoffs and vacating the Sacramento headquarters - isn't going to undertake the expensive and controversial campaign anytime soon, a spokeswoman said.
Shortly before she was let go because of the money woes, spokeswoman Jennifer Kerns said Del Beccaro "got ahead of himself in suggesting the party was pursuing" the ballot measure. She noted that the party's board of directors would have to vote to undertake that sort of action, which they have not done. Del Beccaro could not be reached Friday.
