(58,785 posts)A friend has come out of retirement and is currently captaining a boat towing from half a mile ahead a very long barge filled with liquid sulfur. Better out there than on a train traveling through many towns, but a half mile tow lead is interesting. Presumably little chance of a container ship coming that close.

(1,288 posts)I used to crew on deliveries of big, fancy sailboats from one spot to another. Offshore was and still is my happiest place, more than the mountains or the desert. Night, under the stars, with all that life teaming just a few feet away. Magical. Humbling. So good for the soul.

Personally, I go for slightly smaller ones, though still big by most standards, 55-70 feet. I want to be able to handle it with just a few people, and not need to be a gazillionaire.

DU has people of such varied backgrounds. One of the reasons I've stayed around for so long.
