The full #CambridgeAnalyticaUncovered documentary - secret filming by @Channel4News reveals election tricks
Senior executives at Cambridge Analytica the data company that credits itself with Donald Trumps presidential victory have been secretly filmed saying they could entrap politicians in compromising situations with bribes and Ukrainian sex workers.
In an undercover investigation by Channel 4 News, the companys chief executive Alexander Nix said the British firm secretly campaigns in elections across the world. This includes operating through a web of shadowy front companies, or by using sub-contractors.
In one exchange, when asked about digging up material on political opponents, Mr Nix said they could send some girls around to the candidates house, adding that Ukrainian girls are very beautiful, I find that works very well.
In another he said: Well offer a large amount of money to the candidate, to finance his campaign in exchange for land for instance, well have the whole thing recorded, well blank out the face of our guy and we post it on the Internet.

(51,609 posts)Right now MSNBC is showing parts of it (Ali Velshi). If Facebook knew CA was doing this in 2015, why are they only auditing it NOW!!! And AFTER the horse gets out of the barn!!!! Fuckerberg is GUILTY of electing the moron too.
https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=10378384
Wylie (the whistleblower) told the interviewer that he erased all the data from his Facebook account BEFORE they asked him to do so IN A LETTER. He wrote back that he already did so and that was it. Facebook NEVER even checked to see if he had. If our govt thinks that Fuckerberg is going to audit CA through his own company and all will be safe and secure they are more stupid than I already thought. An outside, non partisan auditing company (Mueller's team should do it if possible...I trust them) should be chosen by a legit company with no govt ties.

The blackmail...and the CA rep behind his desk, nakedly talking about playing to peoples fears.
"Elections are won on emotions, not facts'. They have preference for lies and 'fake news' to stir emotions.
Thank you for your summary. I need to watch more.

(19,429 posts)My recollection is that Francis Urquhart murders Roger O'Neil with rat poison and later murders Mattie Storin by throwing her off the Roof Garden of the Houses of Parliament.
The UK version of "House of Cards" should be the point of reference, since Cambridge Analytica is a UK company ("Cambridge" referring to the one on the River Cam, not the one on the River Charles).
And where are the protests about US Election interference by the British?

The difference is that the Kremlin and Putin have been involved in influencing our elections, not just a rogue Russian company.

(58,785 posts)our privacy, and now it turns out our psyches and our nation, from what the internet has made possible. No matter how the Republicans drag their feet, they will happen.
I hope everyone who watched this noted that a major goal was to change the culture of America. That didn't start with Bannon but back in the 1970s with people like the Kochs and other very wealthy archconservatives, and they went to work through all our institutions, including by changing our universities and plugging well trained graduates into influential positions.
We should be wondering what Americans would be without these evil machinations, so we can look forward to what we will someday once again be. Less than perfect, but not nuts. As Barney Frank might put it.

(11,343 posts)I think this is just the tip of the iceberg. When we start to learn of the subcontracted companies, a whole lot of evil doings are going to be exposed. Buckle up.

(1,009 posts)That Trump probably got kompromat on all his GOP primary opponents from Cambridge Analytical? Gee, maybe this is why they're all falling into line. You can bet cambridge dug up dirt on every single one, including the whole party.
So Dear GOP: Tell your wives about the affair and stop hijacking our country.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)it would blow up in their faces. But perhaps there might actually be one or two compromised. That's shockingly believable when there should be none as we never saw such an astonishing lineup of sleazy nutcases and hyenas on a debate stage. All of them, no.
But I sorta think you (hardly alone here) are vastly overestimating Trump's competence in making him the chief villain and mastermind. He couldn't mastermind himself into his pajamas. He couldn't evenstand by Rosenstein's very valid reason for firing Comey--his highly unethical and probably subversive activities affecting the election. After ordering up a genuine excuse, Trump admitted on public TV and to the Russian ambassador in front of cameras that he'd done it to shut down the Russia investigation. (!!!!! !!!!! !!!!!)
If I were among those supporting him from the background with illicit information, the VERY last thing I'd do would be to tell Trump any secrets that could put me in prison.
Clarity2
(1,009 posts)But with cambridge and putins assistance, why not? He was known as a dirt collector prior to the election, and Im sure he doesnt do that on his own, but via his personal lawyer. Its certainly in his nature.
As for kompromat on the GOP, I remember early after the election it was rumored that trump had sexual kompromat on various GOP at his various trump hotels. Maybe just rumor, but it wouldnt surprise me.
Youre right, its probably not the whole GOP, but some may be changing behavior to protect other repub members. And the gop primary candidates its more than likely cambridge dug up dirt on them during the primaries, especially seeing the video and how they operate.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)lockdown, hoping dirty ops will somehow bring them through this.
When the traditional public servant types were driven out of GOP politics by increasing corruption, they were replaced by people who would do whatever big funders required. So the easiest thing in the world to believe is that a lot of those would be blackmail-able.

and of course these ties from Silicon Valley to Russian Mafia
There's a lot of interesting Russian ties to Silcon Valley, Facebook, Digital Skies, Zynga -facebook games, Air BNB, Spotify, Slack, and so much more
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/05/world/yuri-milner-facebook-twitter-russia.html?mtrref=www.google.com&gwh=DA0D674CBF7C2F13611890CAB2434CCE&gwt=pay
https://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/item/3286-facebook-are-you-interfacing-with-the-russian-mafia--kgb
Andrey Ternovskiy, one of Russia's wunderkind Internet entrepreneurs, is being courted by venture capitalists the world over. To get access to cash he needn't leave Moscow, but he doesn't want to do business with the billionaire oligarchs tied to the Russian Mafia and Putin's KGB-FSB machine in the Kremlin.
So, earlier this year the 18-year-old founder of Chatroullet, a webcam-based conversation website, came to the United States to meet with investors. Ternovskiy didn't tell anyone his itinerary. Nevertheless, when he arrived in New York, there was a chauffer-driven limo waiting for him, courtesy of Yuri Milner and Digital Sky Technologies (DST), Russia's hottest investment company.
Ternovskiy reportedly has rebuffed DST's efforts, describing them as "harassing and hounding."
Ryan Tate at gawker.com appropriately describes the DST limo episode as "creepy." However, the experience goes beyond "creepy," illustrating the nexus between Russia's "business" community and it's intelligence structures. How did DST know Ternovskiy's flight schedule? There are a number of ways that DST could have gotten that information, nearly all of which would be illegal in any country where the "rule of law" is more than merely an empty slogan. But considering DST's high-level ties to Vladimir Putin's KGB-FSB police-state apparatus, obtaining Ternovskiy's airline itinerary must have been child's play.
The Russian teenager is demonstrating better business sense and greater ethical judgment than American corporations, such as social network behemoth Facebook and Wall Street titan Goldman Sachs. Over the past year, DST has made several large investments in Facebook, and now holds a ten percent share in the company, which boasts more than 500 million users worldwide and continues to grow at a phenomenal rate.
DST, which has also invested heavily in Zynga, the online social network game developer (FarmVille, FrontierVille, Mafia Wars [above], etc.), and Groupon, a deal-of-the-day website, has a billion dollars to invest in Internet companies and, reportedly, is also looking at buying into Twitter.

Ties to Kushner
https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/nov/05/russia-funded-facebook-twitter-investments-kushner-investor
The investments were made through a Russian technology magnate, Yuri Milner, who also holds a stake in a company co-owned by Kushner, Donald Trumps son-in-law and senior White House adviser.
The discovery is likely to stir concerns over Russian influence in US politics and the role played by social media in last years presidential election. It may also raise new questions for the social media companies and for Kushner.
Alexander Vershbow, who was a US ambassador to Russia under George W Bush and to Nato under Bill Clinton, said the Russian state institutions were frequently used as tools for Putins pet political projects.
Vershbow said the findings were concerning in light of efforts by Moscow to disrupt US democracy and public debate. There clearly was a wider plan, despite Putins protestations to the contrary, he said.
The investments are detailed in the Paradise Papers, a trove of millions of leaked documents reviewed by the Guardian, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and other partners, along with other previously unreported filings.
Facebook and Twitter were not made aware that funding for the investments came from the state-controlled VTB Bank and a financial arm of the state oil and gas firm Gazprom, according to Milner.
The files show that in 2011, VTB funded a $191m investment in Twitter. About the same time, Gazprom Investholding financed an opaque offshore company, which in turn funded a vehicle that held $1bn-worth of Facebook shares.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_Milner
https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-poligarchs-oligarchs-and-stooges-of-the-paradise-papers
The Paradise Papers have uncovered some of the stooges and their connections to oligarchs. One example is Yuri Milner, a Wharton-educated Russian businessman who once worked for the oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, an oligarch who rejected the mafia-state bargain and lost his fortune, spent ten years in prison, and now lives in exile. Milner started making money through Russian tech investments in the aughts, and by 2009 he was investing in American high-tech companies. He has since become a Silicon Valley fixture and a bit of a science-and-technology celebrity (he founded the Breakthrough Prizes, which offer the biggest cash payout of any science prize in the world). The Paradise Papers expose Milner as a stooge of Alisher Usmanov, an oligarch who has enjoyed most-favored status under Putin. Some of the money for Milners investments in Facebook came from Gazprom Investholding, which is the finance arm of the Russian state gas monopoly, Gazprom; at the time, Usmanov ran Gazprom Investholding.
