Mismatched, too old, holes, too warm, not warm enough and other things. Tonight of all nights.

(2,850 posts)but showing the heel on the floor while getting over the toes is helpful. I'm having trouble raising my foot and reaching out.

I even darn them and the holes just move over. To top it off - more and more people have visitors remove their shoes.

(62,444 posts)But if I don't wear them, well, let's just say that sometimes I leave my shoes out on the deck overnight.

(62,444 posts)Mostly, I work at home, and can get away with the slippers for about three days, which I alternate with a pair of shower shoes. But the slippers are dark black and I don't have a lot of hot water laundry that I'd feel good about throwing them in with. Plus, if I don't get the really, really dry, then it gets to be a vicious cycle. So I end up bargaining with my wife about when she's doing a dark hot water load, and that puts me out of slippers for a couple of days.
(we long ago gave up trying to find a way to share laundry, since we have deep-seated differences of opinion on what goes in with what and at what temperature. and don't even get me started on drying - IMHO softener sheets are the devil's playthings)

(24,007 posts)...to get thru to my husband that underpants and dishtowels do NOT get washed in the same load. "But the water's hot," he would say. "Not nearly hot enough, " I would reply. Not unless you are a commercial laundry.
Until he got the message, I would rewash the dishtowels.

(62,444 posts)I figured Id start a drawer for unmatched socks, and would cycle through that drawer with each load so that the drawer would maintain a dynamic equilibrium.
It is now full of socks.

(62,444 posts)I have always had issues with socks. I've never been terribly flexible in the first place, so I really don't like wearing them, and avoid them whenever possible.
Since I do a fair amount of cycling, and the whether has ranged from low 30's to mid 40's, getting the socks right is key, depending if I'm going to use foot warmers and/or shoe covers.
I have a few pairs of really nice socks, and then a bunch of "meh" socks for anything but cycling. But for business dress on days I'm not working at home, I have my pants cuffs set to break on my shoes. I'm fine as long as I don't have to sit where my ankles will be showing, since I don't have a single pair of dress socks that (a) fit and (b) match.
What I'm thinking of doing is getting rid of every sock I don't like, and not bothering to match any strays, and then just heading out and getting a dozen of the same identical casual socks, good ones, and calling it done.

(45,491 posts)Do you usually come in pairs?
Do you sometimes get lost in the dryer?
If you get a hole in you, does someone throw you away?
If you don't stay up, are you sometimes called a quitter?
Do you look silly if someone wears you with sandals?
In the olden days did people darn you?

(944 posts)My feet are always cold, to the point of numb. I buy several pair of big wonderful socks, a couple times a year. They all get holes in the heels at the same time.
Poor feet.

I hope they keep my perpetually cold spastic feet warm!
I hate hate hate cold feet!
You have my sympathies!
Warmest ones out there are often made out of fleece but they don't allow much air to the skin just like most fleece doesn't.

(25,862 posts)I have come to the conclusion that some, maybe many, dryers have a black hole in them which periodically sucks up a sock or something else that then shows up in someone else's dryer.
As proof, I offer this: Some years ago a towel that was not mine showed up in my dryer.
Some years later a pair of men's khaki pants showed up in the dryer. I asked the four males who lived in the house if it was theirs, and none of them claimed it, although one decided it fit him and took possession of the slacks.
I have various other stories of such anomalies.

(3,424 posts)Maybe it's the washers that are up to something nefarious and the socks never get to the dryer.

(63,221 posts)But at least all my socks match each other, so if I lose another one I can match it to the other odd sock. I don't wear socks in the warmer months. However, my socks only seem to last a season or two, I have to replace them pretty frequently. I am always getting holes in the toes. I should learn how to sew so I could get a little more wear out of them.
