John Paul Stevens, who called for repealing the 2nd Amendment, is a Republican nominated by Ford

don dumbass

THE SECOND AMENDMENT WILL NEVER BE REPEALED! As much as Democrats would like to see this happen, and despite the words yesterday of former Supreme Court Justice Stevens, NO WAY. We need more Republicans in 2018 and must ALWAYS hold the Supreme Court!

4. We really need to stop this...

......and by "this" I mean this whole acting like "But he's a REPUBLICAN!!!!" suddenly makes these opinions and actions valid, and before these brave souls jumped in to rescue us, or opinions were floundering in a sea of confusion and ineptitude.

"BUT MUELLER IS A REPUBLICAN!!!!"
"BUT COMEY IS A REPUBLICAN!!!"
"BUT MCCABE IS A REPUBICAN!!!"
"BUT JUSTICE STEPHENS IS A REPUBLICAN!!!!"

All this does is play into the notion and idea that we need big strong Republican Daddies to validate our already perfectly valid opinions.

Right is right.

Wrong is Wrong.

Just because a Republican does or says something that is correct or moral doesn't mean it wasn't correct or moral before they jumped in, when Democrats were screaming this same stuff.

And this isn't even getting into the already entrenched and established notion that Republicans....Just.....don't.....care. They don't fucking care if any of these people are Republicans, if they go against their hero Don The Con, they are traitors. Saying "BUT THEY ARE REPUBLICANS!!!" isn't going to convince a single one of these mouth breathing troglodytes of anything.

I realize part of the modern Democratic party seems to be self-loathing and constantly having to justify how we're "not like those other Democrats.....we're MODERATE", but I'm really tired of seeing this whole line of justification and of making Republicans the heroes in these situations.

6. There have always been some prominent conservatives/Republicans who want to ban guns

...but still we are the party of increased gun restrictions.

Ronald Reagan agreed to ban new machines guns (even if NFA regulated) from civilian hands in 1986.

George Bush banned the import of semi-auto rifles with no apparent sports use in 1989

Retired Chief Justice Burger said that current 2nd amendment thinking (NRA party line) was a great fraud in 1991.

And yet we have the NRA and the Republican Party s very resistant to more gun restrictions.

7. IT'S A FUCKING TRAP! DON'T FALL FOR IT! Stevens is redirecting MSD cause to be a Third Rail!

.

Changes need to be incremental. Guns will NOT go away in this country and culture in the near future.

What GOP Judge Stevens did was to take the moderate changes MSD is asking for into a sweeping narrative that the GOP will use to paint Democrats as anti-firearm. MSD has around 75% combined support for their causes. The Republicans will try to pull Democrats into a BINARY decision.

There are probably as many Democrats who own firearms as Republicans, although Republicans seem to be more of the types to hoard various weapons. Anyone who things that Democrats don't own firearms to the degree that Republicans do, are just dreaming. They just don't boast about it.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of people blasting me, but we have to keep it real.

There's another OP, with a poll, that shows DU respondents favoring GOP Stevens by 71%

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=10422422

This should not be allowed, as it will paint DU and Democrats as extremist anti-gun nuts.

It will cause damage to the MSD effort and could drive up GOP turnout and suppress Democrats in 2018.

We need every percentage point at the polls this fall.

RW sites will quote DU and other Democrats for wanting to perform a gun grab! It will galvanize the GOPers for 2018.

You may disagree with him (in fact, I do too) but to insinuate that he is intentionally trying to derail the movement borders on an insane delusion.

11. Stevens is an intellectual man. While dissenting Heller, he knows timing would impact MSD movement

To pretend that his statements would not alter the trajectory of the MSD progress is, in itself, delusional.

12. Your insinuation that he is trying to slow things down in nonsense.

Furthermore, does calling for a repeal preclude working on a legislative approach? Of course not. In fact, even after a repeal, the same laws would still need to be passed.

Calling for a repeal places this topic in the forefront, and the battle will be to retain the GOP legislature or else there will be perils in the future. This would then turn into a multi-year battle that spans several election cycles, and the more Democrats subscribe to it, whether as representatives or on DU, it gives credibility to the opposition websites and the FOX propoganda network's arguments and fearmongering.

(nonsense, delusion--nothing like trying to shut down a discussion)

Look at the last 20 years if you need proof.

A discussion where one side is saying that J. Stevens is acting as some sort of sneaky GOP agent has no value to anyone on this forum (and no grounding in reality) so I have no problem with "trying to shut it down." We'd all be better off.
