The revival of Roseanne made a massive impact in its return on Tuesday night in the Nielsen overnight ratings.
ABC aired back-to-back episodes of the show from 8-9 p.m., with the show generating a staggering 5.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 18.2 million viewers for the hour. For comparison, NBCs revival of Will & Grace at the beginning of this season drew a 3.0 and 10.2 million viewers in its premiere, while the launch of Big Bang Theory prequel Young Sheldon drew a 3.8 and 17.2 million. The Conner familys return after 20 years no doubt drew plenty of nostalgia viewers, while others were surely motivated to watch to see how series creator Roseanne Barrs support of President Trump would play out onscreen.
The only scripted show this season to outperform Roseanne was the post-Super Bowl episode of This Is Us, which drew a 9.3 and 26.97 million viewers.

(39,343 posts)Watch her week to week ratings. I'd expect a SHARP decline. It was horrendous and made me feel used.

(21,854 posts)I was surprised.
The people talking about it were in their 50s. They probably remember when the show the first time around and tuned in for nostalgia sake.
I can't imagine young people tuning in for any reason.

(25,272 posts)it was really hyped a lot and that's what drew me to watching it. Then yesterday - here on DU - I saw where Barr jumped on David Hogg of Parkland - with a Nazi comment.
I won't be watching anymore of the Roseanne show now.

Probably a lot of people DVR'd it, so that brought up the ratings.

Now, trying to normalize trumpism... No way...
Crash and burn Roseanne show....

(3,433 posts)There was a lot about that show that was familiar to me growing up. I recorded it last night and am looking forward to watching it tonight.

(2,795 posts)After the initial Trump crap of the first episode, it wasn't bad. They didn't really talk much about politics after that. I think it was nice that they have a storyline with Darline's son grappling with gender identity. Discussion about Becky (women in general) having a right to do what they want since it's their body. DJ is married to a black woman in the military and has a little girl.
Everyone else in that cast, I believe, is not a Trump supporter in real life. Just Roseanne as far as I know. Roseanne seemed a little less natural in her role of Roseanne Connor like she was back in the day. Maybe because she does have a different ideology from decades ago. For the worse. But I loved all of the other characters. Even though it's weird how Dan is actually still alive, I'm glad he is. No way would that show make it without him. He's awesome!

(41,991 posts)I laughed a lot. John Goodman is one of my favorite actors and theyre doing something great in having people in a family hash out the very real problems people have in trying to love one another across a big political divide.

(5,591 posts)From Barr in the marketing. I would guess that old times sake and curiosity has a lot to do with it.
The next few weeks will be more telling.
It wont be a part of my TV interest no matter the ratings. We live that mentality daily with the Cretin. It just is not entertaining.

(7,533 posts)They liked the original Rosanne - which at its time was a rarity in that the characters were lower-class without going full "Married With Children" stupid. They probably remember Rosanne being subversive, but not in any way other than being outspoken and butchering the Star Spangled Banner.

(31,121 posts)continue to unless Roseanne goes off the deep end,
As it is now Roseanne's' pro traitor and Laurie's pro American patriots dialogue is such that I can stand it, as in neither is overshadowing the other.
Were it nor for Laurie I wouldn't watch; and I love Goodman too, but Laurie is Meryl Streep territory and you simply dont see it that often on TV.

(6,402 posts)that they may not otherwise. Yeah, a lot will laugh at the grandkids and how "weird" they are. But they have kids themselves and those kids may see something of themselves in it.
Small bits,. here and there.

(15,805 posts)Never liked Roseanne Barr. Didn't watch her show the first time. Liked her even less due to her political views. Won't be watching her new show either.
Blue_Adept
(6,402 posts)She pops up in the news once in awhile and even rarer overall in entertainment news. So most aren't aware of what she's become.
It got a lot of viewing because it was a HUGE show back in the day. Check out its average ratings back then:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Roseanne_episodes
Hell, the first season average is huge by today's standards but was fairly average at the time before the fracturing of a million channels.
So people tuned in to see what it would be like. No surprise at all. The sustainability will be the interesting part for the remaining six episodes.

I'll have to look for reruns. Thanks for the reminder.

(3,503 posts)Why is this surprising to you? They knocked the Cosby Show out of the box back in the day when no one beat Cosby. They have a baked in audience. If they manage to sustain it, that also wouldnt be surprising.
Youre acting as if the idea of this is absurd.

(37,162 posts)Conservatives radio channels have use Liberals HATE us!!! as advertising copy for a couple of decades now. They love the thought of pissing people off, even when nobody even notices.
Rosanne has come out as a Hillary-hating conspiracy-mongering Trump cultist. That makes her their kind of people, and liberals are outraged about it. Reason enough for them to tune in.

(7,349 posts)and if they'll flip from being trump supporters to a more liberal stance. Unfortunately I won't watch to find out. Roseanne's voice is like chalk on a chalkboard! Laurie Metcalf is highly underrated as an actor, Sara Gilbert was....meh!

Not sure why this is such a mystery to some. I predict it will continue to do very well.

(4,671 posts)It really made Laurie Metcalf stand out. She acted rings around Roseanne, who has slowed down in her delivery and seems to be reading her lines off cue cards.
Oh, and did you notice that she reminded us twice that she's white? She used the racist phrase "poor white trash" and called herself a white witch. I'm waiting for her to say she's "free, white, and over 21."

(11,498 posts)Or sure of herself and confident as she was 20 yrs ago. Many wonder if she isnt in as much control of the series as she was before.
I agree I thought the others carried her this time.
