FOIX (FRANCE) (AFP) -
A French vegan activist was set to appear in court on Thursday for allegedly condoning terrorism after writing on social media that a butcher killed in an Islamist attack deserved his fate, a legal source told AFP.
The unusual case, being prosecuted under France's tough anti-terror security laws, was to be heard in the town of Saint-Gaudens in southwest France.
Police in the region spotted a message overnight on Monday-Tuesday related to the killing of a butcher at the Super U supermarket in Trebes last week during an attack by a gunman claiming allegiance to the Islamic State group, the source said.
"So then, you are shocked that a murderer is killed by a terrorist," wrote the vegan and activist for animal rights. "Not me. I've got zero compassion for him, there's some justice in it."
The message sparked instant criticism and complaints and the author later withdrew it, the legal source said, but prosecutors decided to press charges for condoning terrorism anyway.
The charge can be brought against anyone suspected of approving terrorism or commenting on it favourably. Doing so on the internet carries a maximum seven-year jail term and a fine of up to 100,000 euros ($125,000).

(35,359 posts)Progressives and liberals in the US and elsewhere relied on free speech protections to spread their message. Some on the right tried to suppress it; this was a bad thing.
It's hard to suppress thought; the best you can do is punish words and actions.
It's hard to write speech restrictions that only hit the guilty. While what the idjit said fits the law (it would seem), it's hard to see how even this off-the-cuff comment actively sanctions and encourages terrorism. Unless, of course, the Morocco-born French citizen said something like "at-tufu hu akbar!" as he engaged in his mini-pogrom.
Waiting for somebody to say that a Russian bot is trying to sow inter-human division, though, by encouraging out-group solidarity with animals.

(37 posts)I mean really, if someone thinks you commented favorably about a group that has been deemed a terrorist group, You could actually go to prison for seven years.
Honestly, allowing the government to make up these rules can you lead down some unforeseen paths.

(791 posts)Not being bound by the 1st is a good thing, people have to take responsibility for their own words and actions and unless this guys friends list has people on watch lists he will get a slap on the wrist. The French are not playing games when it comes to terrorism so maybe the law seems harsh but you wouldn't make a joke at an airport and expect it to slip and this clown was actively calling an act of terror "Justice". If little else maybe he will learn a lesson.
I know what it is like living in a country that truly does censor freedom of speech and this to me this is not that.
