While we are on the subject, it is reported that the U.S. Post Office will lose $1.50 on average for each package it delivers for Amazon. That amounts to Billions of Dollars. The Failing N.Y. Times reports that the size of the companys lobbying staff has ballooned, and that...

...does not include the Fake Washington Post, which is used as a lobbyist and should so REGISTER. If the P.O. increased its parcel rates, Amazons shipping costs would rise by $2.6 Billion. This Post Office scam must stop. Amazon must pay real costs (and taxes) now!

A widely cited Citigroup analysis from last year holds that the "true" cost of shipping packages for the Postal Service is about 50 percent higher than what it currently charges. "It is as if every Amazon box comes with a dollar or two stapled to the packing slip -- a gift card from Uncle Sam," read the ensuing editorials.
But Citi arrived at that figure by re-allocating the Post Office's benefits costs -- not the costs specific to package delivery.

Okay, the accounting (I have a degree and everything)
The healthcare funding is a FIXED COST. It's set. There's nothing they can do about it now.
Daily operations are a VARIABLE COST - these can be controlled in several ways.
USPS doesn't lose money from operations.
Amazon using USPS creates revenue (usually at a profit) that is spread across the fixed costs.
UPS and USPS (not 100% sure about Fed Ex) use each other's services everyday. From moving bulk via air and truck to UPS using the USPS the deliver a package that doesn't fit into UPS's schedule. Example -a package to a home 5 miles away from town. USPS goes to every door every day. UPS can't do that and if it serves them better to have USPS do it they do. They have set contractual rates to do this. Again, usually at a profit to USPS. UPS delivers at a loss too but that's due to existing contracts with vendors and to keep market share.
Last thing - the story that "UPS doesn't make left turns" is true. Well some routes yes they make a left turn but only if there is no other option - usually in more rural settings or it's not cost effective to have a brown truck running in both directions on a road. UPS's two biggest concerns are gas and time. Waiting to make a left turn burns both. You know, daily operations...variable costs.

(37,452 posts)I've had bumpers mailed via USPS but were delivered via FED-EX . A family member in the post office said it was because of the location where mailed and that they were too long. They fell with in the weight range. My mail person delivered an old car radiator to my house.I thought they would never deliver something like than.
